Yom Kippur – Day of Atonement

Yom Kippur is the great day of national cleansing and atonement for all Israel. While Passover pictures individual redemption, Yom Kippur foreshadows the national redemption and cleansing of the whole house of Israel when the Messiah returns. It is the day the trumpet of Jubilee sounds — proclaiming liberty, the return to the inheritance, and the complete blotting out of sin.


The High Priest entering the Most Holy Place with blood points directly to Jesus, our Great High Priest, who entered once for all with His own blood to obtain eternal redemption. On this day the scapegoat carried away the sins of the people — a beautiful shadow of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.


It is also the picture of the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, when the Bride is clothed in fine white linen (the righteous acts of the saints) and enters the Promised Land with her Bridegroom. Afflict your soul, humble yourself before the King, and be clothed in Messiah — for in Him our sins are covered, pardoned, and remembered no more.

The Day Atonement is the day when the nation of Israel (as a whole) was cleansed of their sins.  Passover is the picture of individual redemption, Yom Kippur national redemption.  The year of Jubilee (when everyone returned to their land) began on the Day of Atonement.  This is a picture of the great trumpet (Isaiah 27:13) that is blown when those resurrected in the 1st resurrection will receive their inheritance in the land with the Messiah.  The Day of Atonement is a shadow picture of the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, when we are clothed in white garments and then enter into the promised land with the Bridegroom when His feet step down on the Mt. of Olives.

Jer 33:7  And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first. (End of the exile, returning to the Land)
Jer 33:8  And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity which they have sinned against Me; and I will pardon all their iniquities which they have sinned against Me, and which they have rebelled against Me. (Cleansing/atonement at the same time)

Jer 50:19  And I will again bring Israel to his home, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied on Mount Ephraim and Gilead.
Jer 50:20  In those days, and at that time, states Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and it is not; and the sins of Judah, and they will not be found; for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.

2nd Coming

Yom Kippur is a picture of the 2nd coming of the Messiah.

Yom Kippur was an atonement for the golden calf according to Jewish tradition.
On the 6th of Sivan (2nd month) the 10 Commandments were given, on the 7th Moses ascended the mountain and remained 40 days and nights. On the 40th day he descended on the 17th of Tammuz (4th month) and found Israel sinning with the golden calf and he broke the tablets. Moses ascended back up the mountain on the 18th of Tammuz and remained another 40 days and nights. (Deu 10:10) He descended on the 28th of Av (5th month)-hewed the 2nd set of tablets and ascended Sinai a 3rd time. He descended on the 10th of Tishrei (7th month)-Yom Kippur.  It was then that Moshe commanded Israel to build the Tabernacle so that the Lord could dwell in their midst.  This points to Sukkot which follows Yom Kippur.

Rashi comments on Exodus 33:11
and he would return to the camp: After He spoke with him, Moses would return to the camp and teach the elders what he had learned. Moses conducted himself in this way from Yom Kippur until the Mishkan was erected, but no more [than that]. For on the seventeenth of Tammuz the tablets were broken, and on the eighteenth he burned the calf and judged the sinners, and on the nineteenth he went up [Mount Sinai], as it is said: “It came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, etc.” (Exod. 32:30). He spent forty days there and begged for mercy, as it is said: “And I cast myself down before the Lord, etc.” (Deut. 9:18). On Rosh Chodesh Elul it was said to him, “And in the morning you shall ascend Mount Sinai” (Exod. 34:2) to receive the second tablets, and he spent forty days there, as it is said concerning them, “And I remained upon the mountain just as the first days” (Deut. 10:10). Just as the first ones [days] were with good will [from the seventh of Sivan to the seventeenth of Tammuz], so were the last ones [days] with good will. [We may] deduce from this that the intermediate ones were with wrath. On the tenth of Tishri the Holy One, blessed is He, was appeased to Israel joyfully and wholeheartedly, and He said to Moses, “I have forgiven, as you have spoken.” He [God] gave over to him the second tablets, and he [Moses] descended, and He [God] began commanding him concerning the work of the Mishkan. They constructed it until the first of Nissan, and once it was erected, He no longer spoke with him except from the Tent of Meeting. -[from Midrash Tanchuma 31, Seder Olam ch. 6]

The Jubilee, Yom Kippur & the Second coming
Lev 25:8  And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.
Lev 25:9  Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.
Lev 25:10  And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
Lev 25:11  A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed.
Lev 25:12  For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.
Lev 25:13  In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession.

Isa 27:12  And it shall be in that day, Jehovah shall thresh from the channel of the River to the torrent of Egypt; and you shall be gathered one by one, sons of Israel.
Isa 27:13  And it shall be in that day, the great ram’s horn shall be blown; and those perishing in the land of Assyria and the outcasts in the land of Egypt shall come and shall worship Jehovah
in the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Gathered back to the Land, our sins covered
Psa 85:1  To the chief musician. A Psalm for the sons of Korah. O Jehovah, You have been gracious to Your land; You have turned back the captivity of Jacob.
Psa 85:2  You have taken away the iniquity of Your people; You covered all of their sins. Selah.

Afflicting the soul
Lev 23:27  Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict* your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

*Afflict comes from the Hebrew word ענה, the root being ענ , which means to watch intently inasmuch that a furrow forms between the eyes.

It is traditional to abstain from food, drink, washing, anointing body, shoes, marital relations (all bodily pleasures)  {Note…through years of study the author has found that fasting on Yom Kippur is merely a tradition, not a commandment.  The command is to afflict one’s soul which literally means to humble (ie bow down before the King).  Isaiah 58 is a great chapter to study to see that physical fasting can be down in the wrong spirit and nullify the true meaning and intent of Yom Kippur.  More on this in a future study, Yah willing.

 

Fasting

Isa 58:3  They say, Why have we fasted, and You did not see? We have afflicted our soul, and You did not acknowledge. Behold, on the day of your fast you find pleasure; and you drive all your laborers hard.

 

Custom of wearing white on Yom Kippur

White garments=forgiveness of sins
Lev 13:17  And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the plague be turned into white; then the priest shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague: he is clean.
Ecc 9:8  Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.
Isa 1:18  Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Psa 51:7  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

White garments are symbolic of purity and righteousness
Rev 3:4  Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
Rev 3:5  He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Rev 19:7  Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
Rev 19:8  And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Garments of the priesthood
Exo 28:41  And you shall clothe your brother Aaron with them, and his sons with him; and you shall anoint them, and you shall consecrate them, and you shall sanctify them. And they shall minister as priests to Me.
Exo 28:42  And make bleached linen breeches for them, to cover the naked flesh, from the loins as far as the thighs they shall be.
Exo 28:43  And they shall be on Aaron and on his sons in their going into the tabernacle of the congregation, or in their drawing near to the altar to minister in the sanctuary, and so that they shall not raise up iniquity and die. It is a never ending statute to him and to his seed after him.

High priest ceremony on Yom Kippur
Lev 16:30  For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

Cleansing of sin

Isa 1:18  Come now and let us reason together, says Jehovah: Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they are red as the crimson, they shall be like wool.

1Jo 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Psa 51:1  Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your loving-kindness, according to the multitude of Your tender mercies; blot out my transgressions.
Psa 51:2  Wash me completely from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Cleansed from sin, then filled with the Spirit

Psa 51:6  Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts; and in the hidden parts You teach me wisdom.
Psa 51:7  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

The Prophets speak of a time when God will cause us to return to the land of Israel (Jubilee) and will cleanse us from all our iniquities (Day of Atonement).  This will be the ultimate fulfillment of the New Covenant/Marriage covenant.

Jer 31:31  Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
Jer 31:32  not according to the covenant that I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt (which covenant of Mine they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Jehovah).
Jer 31:33  But this shall be the covenant that I will cut with the house of Israel: After those days, declares Jehovah, I will put My Law in their inward parts, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Jer 31:34  And they shall no longer each man teach his neighbor, and each man his brother, saying, Know Jehovah. For they shall all know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest of them, declares Jehovah. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sins no more.

Jer 32:37  Behold, I will gather them out of all the lands, there where I have driven them in My anger, and in My fury, and in great indignation. And I will bring them again to this place, and I will cause them to live in safety.
Jer 32:38  And they shall be My people, and I will be their God.
Jer 32:39  And I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me all the days, for good to them and to their sons after them.
Jer 32:40  And I will cut an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do good to them. But I will put My fear in their heart, that they shall not depart from Me.
Jer 32:41  And I will rejoice over them, to do good to them; and I will truly plant them in this land with all My heart and with all My soul.

When does the Lord rejoice over us?
Isa 62:4  You no longer shall be called Forsaken; nor shall your land any longer be called Desolate. But you shall be called, My Delight is in Her; and your land, Married. For Jehovah
delights in you, and your land is married.
Isa 62:5  For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you. And as a bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so your God shall rejoice over you.

Gathered and cleansed

Jer 33:7  And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
Jer 33:8  And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.

Eze 36:24  For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
Eze 36:25  Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

We are cleansed by the Word so that we can be without blemish at the Wedding Supper
Eph 5:26  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27  That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

The blood of Jesus (the Word) cleanses us from all iniquity
Heb 9:13  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Heb 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Atonement for entire nation of Israel
Lev 16:17  And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

Earthly shadow pictures are a type of the heavenly
Heb 8:1  Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
Heb 8:2  A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
Heb 8:5  Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

Exo 25:9  According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
Heb 9:24  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Heb 9:25  Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
Heb 9:26  For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Jesus is our High Priest
Heb 3:1  Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Heb 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Heb 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Jesus is our intercessor
Rom 8:34  Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Heb 7:22  By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
Heb 7:25  Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
1Jo 2:1  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Jesus is our mediator

Heb 9:15  And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Heb 12:24  And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Jesus’s blood shed for forgiveness of sins
Mat 26:26  And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
Mat 26:27  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

The Blood of bulls and goats can’t take away sins
Heb 10:4  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Only the blood of Jesus can atone for & take away our sins
Joh 1:29  The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Rom 11:27  For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
Isa 43:25  I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
Jer 50:19  And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead.

Our Atonement
2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Through the Veil once a year
Lev 16:2  And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
Heb 9:7  But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
Heb 9:8  The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Heb 9:13  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Heb 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Believers are priests unto God
1Pe 2:5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Rev 5:10  And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Washed in Water
Lev 16:3  Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.
Lev 16:4  He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.

Jesus is the Living Waters
Jer 17:13  O LORD, the hope (mikvah/baptism) of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
Eze 36:25  Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
Joh 3:1  There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
Joh 3:2  The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
Joh 3:3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:4  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
Joh 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Washed and sanctified
1Co 6:9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Hearts sprinkled
Heb 10:22  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Aaron put on the holy garments
Lev 16:4  He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.
Lev 16:32  And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest’s office in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:

We put on holy garments…the righteous garments of Messiah
Rom 13:14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Eph 4:22  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Eph 4:23  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph 4:24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness
Col 3:9  Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Col 3:10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Col 3:11  Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

Putting on white garments
Job 29:14  I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
Psa 132:9  Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.
Isa 61:10  I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Heb 5:1  For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

Heb 5:2  Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

On Yom Kippur, the High Priest had to offer sacrifices for Himself and the people.  Our High Priest Jesus is without sin, but can have compassion on us because He was tempted with sin also.
Heb 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Heb 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Casting lots
Lev 16:5  And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
Lev 16:7  And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Lev 16:8  And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.
Lev 16:9  And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD’S lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.

The lot cast for the LORD

Isa 53:1  Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Isa 53:4  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
1Co 15:3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
Gal 1:3  Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
Gal 1:4  Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Azazel

Lev 16:10  But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.
Lev 16:20  And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:
Lev 16:21  And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:
Lev 16:22  And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

Jesus took away our sins and suffered outside the camp
Isa 53:11  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Heb 13:11  For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.
Heb 13:12  Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

Azazel could also be a picture of the adversary

Rev 20:1  And I saw an angel coming down out of Heaven, having the key of the abyss, and a great chain on his hand.
Rev 20:2  And he laid hold of the dragon, the old serpent who is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3  and threw him into the abyss, and shut him up, and sealed over him, that he should not still lead astray the nations, until the thousand years are fulfilled. And after these things, he must be set loose a little time.

Azazel was one of the fallen angels click herewho led mankind astray before the Flood

“Rabbi Jose says, following a tradition, that these [Nephilim] were Uzza and Azazel, whom, God deprived of their supernal sanctity. How, it may be asked, can they exist in this world? Rabbi Hiya answers, that they were of a class of spirits referred to in the words, ‘and birds which fly on the earth’ (Gen 1:20), and these, as we have said, appear to men in the form of human beings. If it is asked, how can they transform themselves? The answer is, that they do, in fact, transform themselves into all kinds of shapes, because when they come down from heaven they become as concrete as air and take human shape. These are Uzza and Azazel, who rebelled in heaven, and were cast down by God, and became corporeal on the earth and remained on it, not being able to divest themselves of their earthly form. Subsequently, they went astray after women, and up to this day they exist and teach men the arts of magic. They begat children whom they called Anakim (giants), while the Nephilim themselves were called ‘sons of God'” (Zohar, vol. 1, p. 186).

Azazel was one of the angels who taught mankind to sin

Enoc 8:1 Moreover Azazyel taught men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, the fabrication of mirrors, and the workmanship of bracelets and ornaments, the use of paint, the beautifying of the eyebrows, the use of stones of every valuable and select kind, and all sorts of dyes, so that the world became altered.

Enoch 9:5 You have seen what Azazyel has done, how he has taught every species of iniquity upon earth, and has disclosed to the world all the secret things which are done in the heavens.

Azazel was bound and cast into darkness with the entire crime of those days ascribed to him

Enoch 10:6 Again the Lord said to Raphael, Bind Azazyel hand and foot; cast him into darkness; and opening the desert which is in Dudael, cast him in there.
7 Throw upon him hurled and pointed stones, covering him with darkness;
8 There shall he remain for ever; cover his face, that he may not see the light.
9 And in the great day of judgment let him be cast into the fire.
10 Restore the earth, which the angels have corrupted; and announce life to it, that I may revive it.
11 All the sons of men shall not perish in consequence of every secret, by which the Watchers have destroyed, and which they have taught, their offspring.
12 All the earth has been corrupted by the effects of the teaching of Azazyel. To him therefore ascribe the whole crime.

This is an interesting connection to the end of days.  As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the return of the Son of Man.  The fall feasts are a picture of Messiah’s 2nd coming and the events that are associated with it.  Yom Teruah is a picture of the resurrection and gathering unto Messiah in the clouds.  In the days of Noah, Noah and his family were gathered into the ark and rode upon the waters above the mountains…ie the clouds.  The Flood was sent upon the wicked to destroy them just as in Revelation 19 the fowls shall feed on the flesh of the wicked.  Azazel was bound in darkness…satan will be bound for a thousand years.  Noah came out of the ark to a renewed earth…so will Messiah’s people etc…

The Crimson Wool
The Talmud in Yoma 41b describes this event.
• He [the high priest] bound a thread of crimson wool on the head of the he‑goat which was to be sent away, and [meantime] he placed it [at the gate] whence it was to be sent away; and the he‑goat that was to be slaughtered, at the place of the slaughtering, he came to his bullock a second time, pressed his two hands upon it and made confession. And thus he would say: O Lord, I have dealt wrongfully, I have transgressed, I have sinned before thee, I and my house, and the children of Aaron, thy holy people, O Lord, pray forgive the wrongdoings, the transgression, and the sins, which I have committed, transgressed, and sinned before thee, I and my house, and the children of Aaron, your holy people. As it is written in the Torah of Moses, your servant: for on this day atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all the sins shall you be clean before the Lord. And they responded: Blessed be the name of his glorious kingdom for ever and

One of the customs of Yom Kippur is that a crimson sash was tied around the horns of the goat labeled, ‘To Azazel’. Why was a crimson sash used? It is explained in the Talmud in Shabbat 86a that it is based upon Isaiah / Yeshayahu 1:18 which is written:

Isa 1:18  Come now and let us reason together, says Jehovah: Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they are red as the crimson, they shall be like wool.

In the Talmud it says:
•How do we know that a crimson‑coloured strap is tied to the head of the goat that is sent [to ‘azaz’el]? because it is said, If your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow (Shabbat 86a)
•The Talmud describes how the goat led into the wilderness was cast off a cliff as it says:
•What did he do? He divided the thread of crimson wool and tied one half to the rock, the other half between its horns and pushed it from behind. And it went rolling down and before it had reached half its way down hill it was dashed to pieces
(Yoma 67a)

Another custom is that a crimson wool thread was tied to the entrance of the Ulam at the Temple. It was considered a sign that the God of Israel had forgiven the sins of the nation of Israel if the crimson wool thread turned white after the goat labeled, ‘Azazel’ was cast off a cliff into the wilderness.

In the Talmud Yoma 67a, it says:
•Our Rabbis taught: In the beginning they would tie the thread of crimson wool on the entrance of the Ulam (The Hall leading to the interior of the Temple) without: if it became white they rejoiced; if it did not become white, they were sad and ashamed. Thereupon they arranged to tie it to the entrance of the Ulam within. But they were still peeping through and if it became white, they rejoiced, whereas, if it did not become white, they grew sad and ashamed. Thereupon they arranged to tie one half to the rock and the other half between its horns.
It is recorded in the Talmud that 40 years prior to the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E., the crimson wool thread at the Temple did not turn white. In the Talmud it says:
Our Rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of the Temple the lot [‘For the Lord’] did not come up in the right hand; nor did the crimson‑coloured strap become white … (Yoma 39a)

Subtract 40 years from the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD and you come to 30 AD, the year that Messiah was crucified and resurrected.

And thenceforth priests ceased to bless Israel with the name of Jehovah, but used “Adonai” (the Lord).
The rabbis taught: Forty years before the Temple was destroyed, the lot never came into the right hand, the red wool did not become white, the western light did not burn, and the gates of the Temple opened of themselves, till the time that R. Johanan b. Zakkai rebuked them, saying: “Temple, Temple, why alarmest thou us? We know that thou art destined to be destroyed. For of thee hath prophesied Zechariah ben Iddo [Zech. xi. 1]: ‘Open thy doors, O Lebanon, and the fire shall eat thy cedars.'”

Jubilee

Lev 25:8  And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.
Lev 25:9  Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.
Lev 25:10  And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
Lev 25:11  A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed.
Lev 25:12  For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.
Lev 25:13  In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession.

Gathered back to the Land, our sins covered
Psa 85:1  To the chief musician. A Psalm for the sons of Korah. O Jehovah, You have been gracious to Your land; You have turned back the captivity of Jacob.
Psa 85:2  You have taken away the iniquity of Your people; You covered all of their sins. Selah.

This occurs after the resurrection
Psa 85:6  Will You give us life anew, so that Your people may rejoice in You?
Jer 50:19  And I will again bring Israel to his home, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied on Mount Ephraim and Gilead.
Jer 50:20  In those days, and at that time, states Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and it is not; and the sins of Judah, and they will not be found; for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.

The Marriage Supper

At the ‘midnight cry’ that Matthew 25 and the parable of the 10 virgins alludes to, we are gathered together to our bridegroom.  This is what Yom Teruah points to.  In between Yom Teruah and Yom Kippur are 10 days, known as the 10 days of Awe.  This is the wrath of God that is poured out upon the wicked.  Yom Kippur is a picture of the wedding supper where we will be with the Messiah while the fowls are feeding upon the carcasses of the wicked.  We will be dressed in white and will be taken to inherit the Land with our King and Husband.  During Temple times, this was the only day that the High Priest could go into the Holy of Holies.  This is a picture of the wedding chamber where the bridegroom and bride meet face to face.  Why are we commanded to afflict ourselves on Yom Kippur?  Because Messiah said that we fast when the bridegroom is away from us (Matthew 9:15), when we are brought back to Him we will feast at the wedding supper.

Hos 2:16  And at that day, says Jehovah, you shall call Me, My husband; and you shall no more call Me, My Baal.
Hos 2:17  For I will take away the names of the Baals out of her mouth; and they shall no more be remembered by their name.
Hos 2:18  And in that day I will cut a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and the creepers of the ground. And I will break the bow and the sword, and the battle out of the earth, and I will make them to lie down safely.
Hos 2:19  And I will betroth you to Me forever. Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in mercy, and in compassions.
Hos 2:20  I will even betroth you to Me in faithfulness. And you shall know Jehovah.
Hos 2:21  And it shall be in that day, I will answer, says Jehovah. I will answer the heavens, and they shall answer the earth.
Hos 2:22  And the earth shall hear the grain, and the wine, and the oil; and they shall hear Jezreel.
Hos 2:23  And I will sow her to Me in the earth. And I will have mercy on No Mercy. And I will say to Not My People, You are My people! And they shall say, My God!

Rev 19:6  And I heard as a sound of a numerous crowd, and as a sound of many waters, and as a sound of strong thunders, saying, Hallelujah! Because the Lord God Almighty reigned. *

*When does this occur?  At the 7th trump of Revelation…the great trumpet is blown.

Rev 11:15  And the seventh angel trumpeted. And there were great voices in Heaven, saying, The kingdoms of the world became our Lord’s, even of His Christ; and He shall reign to the ages of the ages.
Rev 19:7  Let us rejoice and let us exult, and we will give glory to Him, because the marriage of the Lamb came, and His wife prepared herself.
Rev 19:8  And it was given to her that she be clothed in fine linen, pure and bright; for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints.
Rev 19:9  And he says to me, Write: Blessed are the ones having been called to the supper of the marriage of the Lamb. And he says to me, These Words of God are true.

The Marriage supper connects to the days of Noah.

Mat 25:1  Then the kingdom of Heaven shall be compared to ten virgins who taking their lamps, went out to a meeting of the bridegroom.
Mat 25:2  And five of them were wise, and five foolish.
Mat 25:3  Those being foolish, taking their lamps, did not take oil with them.
Mat 25:4  But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
Mat 25:5  But the bridegroom delaying, all nodded and slept.
Mat 25:6  And at midnight, a cry occurred: Behold, the bridegroom comes! Go out to meet him.
Mat 25:7  Then all those virgins were aroused and prepared their lamps.
Mat 25:8  And the foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.
Mat 25:9  But the wise answered, saying, No, lest there not be enough for us and you. But rather, go to those who sell and buy for yourselves. (A reference to the mark of the beast?)
Mat 25:10  But they going away to buy, the bridegroom came. And those ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut.
Mat 25:11  And afterwards, the rest of the virgins also came, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
Mat 25:12  But answering, he said, Truly I say to you, I do not know you.**

Mat 25:13  Therefore, watch*, for you do not know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man comes.

*Watch-pointing back ענה to Yom Kippur.

**Here we see those who did not enter the wedding supper because they did not know Him.  This is further explain in Matthew 7 as those who do not walk in Torah.  When we enter the New Covenant we have the Torah written upon our hearts.  The main reason that many believers in Jesus are blinded to this is that their hearts have been seared by false prophets/teachers as Messiah speaks of in the preceding verses in Matthew 7:21.  These are people who believe but yet don’t walk in covenant relationship with the Most High.  The same can be said in the days of Noah.  Noah WALKED with the Lord, meaning He knew that intimate covenant relationship as a disciple walks with His teacher.  There were many people in the world that probably believed in the Almighty, yet they did not walk out that belief and they were left outside of the ark when the rains came.  Jesus speaks of this at the end of Matthew chapter 7.

Mat 7:12  Therefore, all things, whatever you desire that men should do to you, so also you should do to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Mat 7:13  Go in through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are the ones entering in through it.
Mat 7:14  For narrow is the gate, and constricted is the way that leads away into life, and few are the ones finding it.
Mat 7:15  But beware of the false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inside they are plundering wolves.
Mat 7:16  From their fruits you shall know them. Do they gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
Mat 7:17  So every good tree produces good fruits, but the corrupt tree produces evil fruits.
Mat 7:18  A good tree cannot produce evil fruits, nor a corrupt tree produce good fruits.
Mat 7:19  Every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and is thrown into fire.
Mat 7:20  Then surely from their fruits you shall know them.
Mat 7:21  Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter into the kingdom of Heaven, but the ones who do the will of My Father in Heaven.
Mat 7:22  Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name do many works of power?
Mat 7:23  And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; “depart from Me, those working lawlessness!” Psa. 6:8
Mat 7:24  Then everyone who hears these Words from Me, and does them, I will compare him to a wise man who built his house on the rock;
Mat 7:25  and the rain came down, and the floods came up, and the winds blew, and fell against that house; but it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
Mat 7:26  And everyone who hears these Words of Mine, and who does not do them, he shall be compared to a foolish man who built his house on the sand;
Mat 7:27  and the rain came down, and the floods came up, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and it fell, and great was the collapse of it.

This connection with the days of Noah is further seen in the book of Jasher.

Jasher 6:17 And the sons of men assembled together, about seven hundred thousand men and women, and they came unto Noah to the ark.

18 And they called to Noah, saying, Open for us that we may come to thee in the ark–and wherefore shall we die?

19 And Noah, with a loud voice, answered them from the ark, saying, Have you not all rebelled against the Lord, and said that he does not exist? and therefore the Lord brought upon you this evil, to destroy and cut you off from the face of the earth.20 Is not this the thing that I spoke to you of one hundred and twenty years back, and you would not hearken to the voice of the Lord, and now do you desire to live upon earth?

21 And they said to Noah, We are ready to return to the Lord; only open for us that we may live and not die.

22 And Noah answered them, saying, Behold now that you see the trouble of your souls, you wish to return to the Lord; why did you not return during these hundred and twenty years, which the Lord granted you as the determined period?

23 But now you come and tell me this on account of the troubles of your souls, now also the Lord will not listen to you, neither will he give ear to you on this day, so that you will not now succeed in your wishes.

24 And the sons of men approached in order to break into the ark, to come in on account of the rain, for they could not bear the rain upon them.

25 And the Lord sent all the beasts and animals that stood round the ark. And the beasts overpowered them and drove them from that place, and every man went his way and they again scattered themselves upon the face of the earth.

Notice that the beasts attacked the unbelievers.  So too it will be the beasts that feed upon the wicked during Yom Kippur.

Rev 19:16  And He has on His garment and on His thigh a name having been written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Rev 19:17  And I saw one angel standing in the sun. And he cried with a great voice, saying to all the birds flying in mid-heaven, Come and gather together to the supper of the great God,
Rev 19:18  that you may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of chiliarchs, and the flesh of strong ones, and the flesh of horses, and of the ones sitting on them, and the flesh of all, both freemen and slaves, even of the small and great.
Rev 19:19  And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth, and their armies being assembled to make war with the One sitting on the horse, and with His army.
Rev 19:20  And the beast was seized, and with this one the false prophet doing signs before it, by which he led astray those having received the mark of the beast, and those worshiping its image. The two were thrown alive into the Lake of Fire burning with brimstone.
Rev 19:21  And the rest were killed with the sword of the One sitting on the horse, the sword having gone forth from His mouth. And all the birds were filled from their flesh.

At this time, Jesus will step down upon the Mt. of Olives

Zec 14:3  And Jehovah shall go out and fight against those nations, (Revelation 19:16) like the day He fought in the day of battle.
Zec 14:4  And His feet shall stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives shall divide from its middle, from the east even to the west, a very great valley. And half of the mountain shall move toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

Zec 14:9  And Jehovah shall be King over all the earth. In that day there shall be one Jehovah, and His name one.
