Biblical Definitions – Holiness

Biblical ‘holiness’ (Hebrew: Qodesh קֹדֶשׁ / Greek: Hagios ἅγιος) means to be set apart, sacred, and pure. It is not just moral behavior — it is separation unto God, reflecting His own holy nature. True holiness involves both position (being made holy in Christ) and practice (living a consecrated life). As it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’ — a call to purity, righteousness, and intimate fellowship with a holy God.

Heb 12:14  Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

H6944 קדשׁ qôdesh 1) apartness, holiness, sacredness, separateness

qodesh

The Hebrew meaning of the word holy is to separate from something (the world) and to be joined to something else (God).  Like most Hebrew words, it can be both positive and negative.  One can be holy unto God, or ‘holy’ unto the adversary.  The word for prostitutes, especially cult prostitutes who’s function was to serve the temples of satan, is the same word for holy in Hebrew.  The word for sanctuary is מקדש ‘miqdash’ which comes from this same Hebrew word.  We can choose to be holy unto God and be His sanctuary (מקדש ‘miqdash’) or we can choose to be set apart FROM GOD and be the sanctuary of evil.

In Hebrew the idea of freedom has the same concept.  We can be free IN Him or free FROM Him.  See Freedom study.

1Pe 1:14  as children of obedience, not fashioning yourselves to your former lusts in your ignorance,
1Pe 1:15  but according to the Holy One who has called you, you also become holy in all conduct;
1Pe 1:16  because it has been written,
“Be holy,” “because I am holy.” Lev. 19:2

We are to be holy as He is Holy

Lev 11:45  for I am Jehovah who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to become your God; and you shall be holy, for I am holy.
Lev 19:2  Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them, You are holy, for I am holy, Jehovah your God.
Lev 20:26  and you shall be holy to Me, for I, Jehovah, am holy; and I have set you apart from the nations to become Mine.

2Co 6:14  Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership does righteousness have with lawlessness? And what fellowship does light have with darkness?
2Co 6:15  And what agreement does Christ have with Belial ? Or what part does a believer have with an unbeliever?

The word Belial means without the yoke.  This means to be without Word/Torah

If we abide in Him we shall be Holy

Rom 11:16  Now if the firstfruit is holy, so also the lump. And if the root is holy, so also the branches.  Olive Tree.

Joh 15:1  I am the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.
Joh 15:2  Every branch in Me not bearing fruit, He takes it away; and each one bearing fruit, He prunes, so that it may bear more fruit.
Joh 15:3  You are already pruned because of the Word which I have spoken to you.

His Temple

Exo 25:8  And let them make a sanctuary* for Me, that I may dwell in their midst.
2Co 6:16  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2Co 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, {this is the meaning of qodesh/saint…set apartness} saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
2Co 6:18  And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

The word for sanctuary in the above verse in Exodus 25 is מקדש ‘miqdash’ which comes from the root קדש ‘qodesh’ meaning holy/set apart.

See study on the biblical definition of the Church to see the connection to holiness, the church, His body, the saints

Just as the word holiness (qodesh) suggests, there are two ‘churches’, two bodies, two set-apart peoples.  One is the body of satan (the whore of Babel), the other is the body of Messiah.  It all goes back to the garden.  There were two trees.  We can choose to be joined to the Tree of Life who is Messiah or we can choose to be joined to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil which is religion and is enwrapped by the adversary.

cult prostitute

The word above for set apart prostitute is translated as Sodomy in most English translations.

King James Version

Deu 23:17  There shall be no whore (קדשה ‘qedeshah’) of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite (קדש ‘qodesh’) of the sons of Israel.

Jay P Green Literal version

Deu 23:17  There shall be no prostitute among the daughters of Israel, nor shall there be a homosexual among the sons of Israel.

Notice how the word קדש ‘qodesh’ in this context is translated as homosexual or sodomy by most translators.  Literally, this is not the meaning of the word but on a deeper level it does mean this.  It is the idea of joining together strange flesh.  A cult prostitute is the physical representation of whoring with the adversary, of being joined to him.

John Gill’s commentary

Deu 23:17  There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel,…. The word for “whore” is “kedeshah”, which properly signifies an “holy” one; and here, by an antiphrasis, an unholy, an impure person, one that is defiled by man; See Gill on Gen_38:18. Jarchi interprets the word, one that makes herself common, that is sanctified, or set apart; that is, one that separates herself for such service, and prostitutes herself to everyone that passes by: but some understand this not of common harlots in the streets, but of sacred whores, or such as were consecrated to Heathen deities, as such there were to Venus. Strabo (x) tells us that the temple of Venus at Corinth was so rich, that more than a thousand of those sacred harlots were kept, whom men and women had devoted to that goddess; and so a multitude of the same sort were at Comana, which he calls little Corinth (y); now these of all harlots being the most abominable are forbidden to be among the daughters of Israel:

nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel: by the same rule that “kedeshah” is rendered “a whore” in the preceding clause, “kadesh” should be rendered “an whoremonger” here, as in the Septuagint and Vulgate Latin versions; though Aben Ezra interprets it passively, one that is lain with, and Jarchi one that is prepared to lie with a male, that prostitutes his body in this unnatural way; and it looks as if there were such sort of persons sacred to idols, since we read of the houses of the sodomites, which were by, or rather in the house of the Lord, 2Ki_23:7.

Keil and Delitzsch

Deu 23:17-18
On the other hand, male and female prostitutes of Israelitish descent were not to be tolerated; i.e., it was not to be allowed, that either a male or female among the Israelites should give himself up to prostitution as an act of religious worship. The exclusion of foreign prostitutes was involved in the command to root out the Canaanites. קָדֵּשׁ and קְדֵשָׁה were persons who prostituted themselves in the worship of the Canaanitish Astarte (see at Gen_38:21). – “The wages of a prostitute and the money of dogs shall not come into the house of the Lord on account of (ל, for the more remote cause, Ewald, §217) any vow; for even both these (viz., even the prostitute and dog, not merely their dishonourable gains) are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” “The hire of a whore” is what the kedeshah was paid for giving herself up. “The price of a dog” is not the price paid for the sale of a dog (Bochart, Spencer, Iken, Baumgarten, etc.), but is a figurative expression used to denote the gains of the kadesh, who was called κίναιδος by the Greeks, and received his name from the dog-like manner in which the male kadesh debased himself (see Rev_22:15, where the unclean are distinctly called “dogs”).

In the Scriptures ‘gentiles’ are referred to as dogs…why, because of this very reason.  They are the body of satan.  Nobody who is in covenant with God should refer to themselves as a ‘gentile.’

From Websters 1828 Dictionary

Sodomy
SOD’OMY, n. A crime against nature.

Sodomite
SOD’OMITE, n.

1. An inhabitant of Sodom.

2. One guilty of sodomy.

Homosexuality is sodomy, but not all sodomites are homosexuals.  A Sodomite is someone who seeks to change nature or the natural way of things.  In the garden there was only one way.  The way of Torah.  Satan came to destroy that way, hence, he is the first sodomite.  This is what Genesis 6 is all about.  The sons of God saw that the daughters of Adam were ‘tovot’ or good.  The Hebrew word good means everything is the way it should be.  The fallen angels came to destroy that which is good or the natural way of things.

Jud 1:6  And those angels not having kept their first place, but having deserted their dwelling-place, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of a great Day;
Jud 1:7  as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, in like manner to these, committing fornication, and going away after other flesh, laid down an example before-times, undergoing vengeance of everlasting fire.

Marriage was ordained in the garden to be between one man and one woman as a picture of Messiah and His bride.  The adversary seeks to pervert the natural way of things by causing mankind to commit fornication with the whore of Babylon. May we all choose to forsake false religion, to come out of Babylon and to be joined to the tree of Life which is the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us.  May we abide in Him and He in us that we may bring forth the fruit of Life.
