Biblical Definitions – Faith

“To have ‘faith’ (Hebrew: Emunah אמונה / Greek: Pistis πίστις) is much more than belief or positive thinking. It means firmness, steadfastness, and active trust — like a secure foundation. Biblical faith is loyal, obedient, and demonstrated through action. “It is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Romans 5.1

Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rom 5:2  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3  And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom 5:4  And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
Rom 5:5  And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Rom 5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Rom 5:11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Php 3:7  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
Php 3:8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
Php 3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Php 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Php 3:11  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

We are admonished in Scripture to test our selves to see if we are walking in the faith.

2Co_13:5  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Faith in Messiah brings sanctification:

Act_26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Faith purifies us:

Act_15:9  And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Faith brings righteousness/justification:

Rom_1:17  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Rom_3:22  Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Rom_3:28  Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Rom_3:30  Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Rom 4:5  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Rom 4:6  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Rom 4:7  Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Rom 4:8  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Rom 4:9  Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
Rom 4:13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Rom 4:14  For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
Rom 4:15  Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Rom 4:16  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
Rom 4:17  (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
Rom 4:18  Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
Rom 4:19  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:
Rom 4:20  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
Rom 4:21  And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Rom 4:22  And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
Rom 4:23  Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
Rom 4:24  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Rom 4:25  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
Rom_5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rom_5:2  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Works of the law are not equated with faith:

Rom 9:31  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Rom 9:32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
Rom 9:33  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Rom 10:1  Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
Rom 10:2  For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
Rom 10:3  For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Rom 10:4  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Rom 10:5  For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
Rom 10:6  But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
Rom 10:7  Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
Rom 10:8  But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Rom 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom 10:11  For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Rom 10:12  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Rom 10:14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Rom 10:15  And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Rom 10:16  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Rom 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Gal 2:16  Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Gal 2:17  But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.
Gal 2:18  For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
Gal 2:19  For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
Gal 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Gal 2:21  I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Gal 3:6  Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Gal 3:7  Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
Gal 3:8  And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Gal 3:9  So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
Gal 3:10  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Gal 3:11  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Gal 3:12  And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Gal 3:13  Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Gal 3:14  That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Gal_3:26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

However, those who walk in faith establish the Torah:

Rom_3:31  Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

We are saved by grace through faith unto good works:

Eph 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Eph 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Faith is perfected by our works:

Jas 2:17  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Jas 2:18  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Jas 2:19  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
Jas 2:20  But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Jas 2:21  Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Jas 2:22  Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
Jas 2:23  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Jas 2:24  Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Jas 2:25  Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
Jas 2:26  For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

1Pe_1:9  Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

We overcome by our faith

1Jn_5:4  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Faith=Truth
Act 6:7  And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith*.

*The Greek word here is πίστις ‘pistis’ which means a conviction of truth.  This is used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew word אמונה ‘emunah’ which means faith, truth, a firm foundation.

Jer 7:28  But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction:truth{אמונה ‘emunah’} is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
Psa 119:30  I have chosen the way of truth {אמונה ‘emunah’}: thy judgments have I laid before me.
Psa 119:138  You have enjoined Your Testimonies as righteous and very faithful {אמונה ‘emunah’}.

Deu 32:20  And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith {אמונה ‘emunah’}.
Isa 26:2  Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth {אמונה ‘emunah’} may enter in.

THE WORD (TORAH) IS HIS FAITH
Hab 2:4  Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith (אמונה ‘emunah’).

אמונה ‘emunah’ is equated with the Gospel

Rom 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation to everyone believing, both to Jew first, and to Greek;
Rom 1:17  for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; even as it has been written, “But the just shall live by faith.”

HE WILL JUDGE THE WORLD BY HIS FAITH/WORD
Psa 96:13  Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth{אמונה ‘emunah’}.

Judged by His Word…His Word=Truth=Faith
Joh 12:48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Rev 19:11  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Paul made the same connection between His faith and the judgment
Rom 1:17  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Rom 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Rom 10:8  But what does it say? “The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the Word of faith which we proclaim)
Deuteronomy 30:12-14 -Paul was saying that he proclaimed the Torah according to Deut. 30

Rom 10:17  Then faith is of hearing, and hearing through the Word of God.

Keeping the Commandments is acceptable faithfulness
Sir 15:15  If thou wilt, to keep the commandments, and to perform acceptable faithfulness.

FAITH IS A WEIGHTIER MATTER OF TORAH
Mat 23:23  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

FAITH AND OBEDIENCE are LINKED TOGETHER
Deu 9:23  Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed (Hebrew אמנ ‘aman’ from the same root as אמונה ‘emunah’) him not, nor hearkened to his voice.
Jam 2:17  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Act 10:34  Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
Act 10:35  But in every nation he that feareth {believes/has faith} him, and worketh righteousness {walks in the commandments}, is accepted with him.
Heb 4:6  Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief (ἀπείθεια ‘apeitheia’ – disobedience):
Heb 4:11  Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief (ἀπείθεια ‘apeitheia’ – disobedience).
Col 3:6  For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience (ἀπείθεια ‘apeitheia’):
Rom 1:5  by whom we received grace and apostleship to obedience of faith among all the nations, for His name’s sake,
Rom 10:16  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Rom 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Psa 119:86  All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.
Psa 119:138  Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful.

Rom 11:30  For as you then also disobeyed
(ἀπειθέω ‘apeitheō’) God, but now have obtained mercy by the disobedience (ἀπείθεια ‘apeitheia’) of these,
Rom 11:31  so also these now have disobeyed (ἀπειθέω ‘apeitheō’), so that they also may obtain mercy by your mercy.
Rom 11:32  For God shut up all into disobedience (G543), that He may show mercy to all.

LITV – Literal Version Jay P. Green
Joh 3:36  The one believing into the Son has everlasting life; but the one disobeying the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

REBELLION AGAINST HIS COMMANDMENTS=NO FAITH
Deu 9:23  Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.
Num 20:12  And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Deu 32:51  Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

FAITH AND TORAH….one does not nullify the other
Jud 1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Luk 18:8   …..Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

We are saved by grace through faith.  Faith is believing in the Most High and doing what He says.  Obedience is not about salvation but a result of on believing that He is and He will reward those who diligently seek Him.

Eph 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Jam 2:16  And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
Jam 2:17  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Jam 2:18  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Joh 14:23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

What is circumcision of the heart?…The Torah written on your heart
Deu 10:12  And now, Israel, what has Jehovah your God asked of you, except to fear Jehovah your God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul;
Deu 10:13  to keep the commandments of ? Jehovah , and His statutes which I am commanding you today, for your good.
Deu 10:14  Behold, the heavens and the Heaven of the heavens, the earth and all in it, belong to Jehovah your God.
Deu 10:15  Only, Jehovah has delighted in your fathers, to love them; and He chose their seed after them, on you out of all the peoples, as it is today.
Deu 10:16  And you shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and you shall not harden your neck any more.
Deu 30:6  And Jehovah your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live.
Deu 30:7  And Jehovah your God will put all these curses on your enemies, and on those that hate you, who have persecuted you.
Deu 30:8  And you shall return and obey the voice of Jehovah , and do all His commandments which I am commanding you today.
Lev 26:40  And if they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass with which they have trespassed against Me; and, also, that they have walked contrary to Me,
Lev 26:41  that I also have walked contrary to them, and I have brought them into the land of their enemies; if their uncircumcised hearts are then humbled, and they then have accepted punishment for their iniquity;
Lev 26:42  then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and I shall also remember My covenant with Abraham, and I shall remember the land.
1Sa 16:7  And Jehovah said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance, nor to the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For man does not see what He sees. For man looks for the eyes, but Jehovah looks for the heart.

CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART
Rom 2:28  For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
Rom 2:29  But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Rom 2:25  For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
Jer 4:4  Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart,
Jer 9:26  Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the sons of Ammon, and Moab, and all those trimmed on the edges of their beards, who dwell in the wilderness. For all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel, those uncircumcised of heart.

Rom 2:13  (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

FAITH WITHOUT LOVE IS DEAD…..LOVE IS OBEDIENCE.

1Co 13:13  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity
.

WHAT IS LOVE?
1Jo 5:3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

FAITH….. THEN OBEDIENCE
Luk 18:42  And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.
Luk 18:43  And immediately he received his sight, and followed him,
1Jo 2:6  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Noah believed the Word and then acted upon it
Heb 11:7  By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith .

Abraham believed the Word  then acted on it.

Rabbinic thought agrees with the New Testament writings about Faith

Midrash Tanhuma from Sacred Books of the East vol IV pg 23
“How great is faith!  It secures happiness and salvation.  Abraham’s faith was accounted to him as righteousness.  It was the faith which the Israelites had that redeemed them from Egypt (Exod. iv. 31).  Their faith on the bank of the Red Sea carried them over that sea and brought them to the land of promise.  The Lord keepeth the faithful (Ps. xxxi.).  The righteous liveth by his faith (Habak. ii.).  The last redemption of Israel will only be effected through faith.  See how King David values faith (Ps. cv.).  Concerning faith, David says, “This is the gate of the Lord, the righteous shall enter therein.”

The lifting up of Moses’s hands did not defeat Amalek, nor did the copper serpent stay the biting of the burning serpents. It was the directing by these of the hearts of the Israelites, with their prayers heavenward, that defeated Amalek and caused the fiery serpents to cease.

Faith and Truth are synonomous

Faith (אמונה ‘emunah’) and Truth (אמת ‘emet’) come from the same root and as seen above are interchangeable when translating the text.

A lie is not of the truth, therefore a lie is not of faith.  Isaiah says that lying sons are those who will not hear the Torah.  Their heart is as adamant stone.  Above it is seen that those walking in Faith, walking in Torah, walking in Truth  have circumcised hearts.

Isa 30:8  Now come, write it before them on a tablet, and note it on a book, so that it may be for the latter day, until forever;
Isa 30:9  that this is a rebellious people, lying sons; sons who are not willing to hear the Law of Jehovah ;
Isa 30:10  who say to the seers, Do not see; and to visioners, Do not have a vision for right things to us; speak smooth things to us; have a vision of trifles.
Isa 30:11  Turn aside from the way; stretch from the path; cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

Zec 7:12  And they made their heart adamant from hearing the Law and the Words which Jehovah of Hosts has sent by the former prophets through His Spirit. And great wrath was from Jehovah of Hosts.

This is one primary reason why the Lord Jesus said the Pharisees were of their father the devil (John 8:44, 49).   They were walking without faith.

Joh 8:43  Why do you not know My speech? It is because you are not able to hear My Word (uncircumcised hearts, adamant stone).
Joh 8:44  You are of the Devil as father, and the lusts of your father you desire to do. That one was a murderer from the beginning, and he has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own, because he is a liar, and the father of it.

What was the first lie?  It was when the adversary convinced Eve not to believe/obey the commandment not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  If Eve and Adam were walking in faith they would have believed that they were going to die in the day they ate of that tree but the adversary convinced them otherwise.  So today, the adversary has convinced millions of believers ‘Hath God said’.

Ancient Hebrew Definition

אמונה ‘emunah’ comes from the 3 letter root אמן  ‘aman’

אמן ‘aman’ means truly, a sure foundation and support.  This is why Messiah is spoken of as the ‘Amen’ (Revelation 3:14).  He is the firm foundation represented by the Tree of Life/the Word.  The other tree in midst the Garden was the tree of knowledge which represents unfaithfulness/lawlessness.  Man must choose between the two.  The choice that one makes determines which seed/tree he will be a part of.  Interestingly, the parent root for the word אמונה ‘emunah’ is מן which means ‘the blood continues.’  It is the word used in Genesis 1 for ‘kind’ or species.

Jas 1:18  Having purposed, He brought us forth by the Word of truth, for us to be a certain firstfruit of His creatures.

For more on this choice between the tree of Life and the tree of knowledge see the series on the mark of the beast.

Etymology

Faith is Biblically defined as walking in Truth who is the Word/Messiah.  Faith traces back to the Garden of Eden and the two trees in the midst of the Garden.  The Tree of Life which represents truth/faith and the tree of knowledge which represents unfaithfulness/lawlessness and man’s own will as to what is good or evil.

The English word faith comes from the Old French word ‘foi’ which means faith, belief, trust which traces back further to the Latin word ‘fides’ which has the same meaning.  ‘Fides’ traces back to the Hebrew word בטח ‘batach.’  בטח ‘batach’ is also the source for the English word ‘trust.’  בטח ‘batach’ means to cling to someone or something.  It is pictured in the natural realm in a melon which clings to the vine.  Here again the picture of the Tree of Life and the tree of knowledge is seen.  Man can have faith in God and cling to Him or man can choose his own way and cling to the tree of knowledge.  This concept of clinging to the vine is discussed in more detail in the Biblical definition of the Olive tree and the word אב ‘av’ (Father).
