Daily Tidbits 6/12/26 – Awe

Psa 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
Psa 33:9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

“One cannot help but be in awe when one contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries to comprehend only a little of this mystery every day.” – Albert Einstein

“Awe is the condition of a man’s spirit realizing Who God is and what He has done for him personally. Our Lord emphasizes the attitude of a child; no attitude can express such solemn awe and familiarity as that of a child.” (Not Knowing Whither, 882 L – Oswald Chambers)

In a previous tidbit on the toddler the awe and fear of the Lord is seen. The Lord Jesus said that we are to be converted as children or we will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Mat 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted (στρέφω ‘strephō’), and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

G4762
στρέφω ‘strephō’
strephō
stref’-o
Strengthened from the base of G5157; to twist, that is, turn quite around or reverse (literally or figuratively): – convert, turn (again, back again, self, self about).

The word for converted in Matthew 18:3 is στρέφω ‘strephō’ which is used in the Septuagint to translate the word גָּרַר ‘garar.’ This is a cognate for גּוּר ‘gur’ which is translated as “awe” in Psalm 33:8. גּוּר ‘gur’ has the meaning of a stranger dwelling in a foreign land which produces a fearful respect. גּוּר ‘gur’ is also translated as young lion, perhaps from the sound of the lion. The lion’s roar evokes visceral fear and is awe-inspiring.

Psa_33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe (גּוּר ‘gur’) of him.

Psa 86:11  Teach {ירה ‘yarah’} me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear {ירא ‘yare’} thy name.

Thunderstorms naturally bring a sense of fear and awe to man which links to the lion whose roar is likened to thunder.  Lions are known for stooping their heads towards the ground and roaring which causes the sound to roll along like thunder for long distances.

Further connecting the lion to thunderstorms is the word אריה  ‘aryeh.’  The most common word used for lion is אריה  ‘aryeh’ which comes from the root word רה ‘rah’ which means a heavy flow of water.

The voice of God is likened unto this roaring of a lion and thunder from heaven.  One of the Hebrew words for thunder is קול ‘qol’ which literally means the voice of the Shepherd.

Amo 1:2  And he said: Jehovah will roar from Zion and utter His voice from Jerusalem. And the pastures of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
Joe 3:16  And Jehovah roars from Zion, and He gives His voice from Jerusalem. And the heavens and the earth quake. But Jehovah is a refuge for His people and a fortress to the sons of Israel.

Jer 25:30  And now you prophesy against them all these Words, and say to them, Jehovah shall roar from on high and give forth His voice from His holy habitation; He shall mightily roar over His dwelling place. He answers with a shout, like those who tread out the grapes, against all those living in the earth.
Jer 25:31  A noise {שׁאון ‘shâ’ôn’} shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.

The word שׁאון ‘shâ’ôn’ pictures a thunderstorm or the sound of many waters.

Jer 25:32  So says Jehovah of Hosts, Behold, evil is going from nation to nation, and a great tempest {סערה ‘se`arah’ – storm} shall be stirred up from the corners of the earth.
Jer 25:33  And the slain of Jehovah shall be at that day from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be mourned, nor gathered, nor buried; they shall be as dung on the face of the earth.
Jer 25:34  Howl, O shepherds, and cry, and roll in ashes, O leaders of the flock! For the days of your slaughter and of your scatterings are fulfilled, and you shall fall like a desirable vessel.
Jer 25:35  And refuge has perished from the shepherds, and escape from the leaders of the flock.
Jer 25:36  The sound of the cry of the shepherds, and the howling from the leaders of the flock will be heard. For Jehovah is spoiling their pasture.
Jer 25:37  And the peaceful pastures are devastated, because of the glow of the anger of Jehovah.
Jer 25:38  Like the young lion, He has left His den; for their land is a waste because of the glow of the oppressor, and because of His flowing anger.

awe (n.) Look up awe at Dictionary.com
c.1300, earlier aghe, c.1200, from a Scandinavian source, e.g. Old Norse agi “fright;” from Proto-Germanic *agiz- (cf. Old English ege “fear,” Old High German agiso “fright, terror,” Gothic agis “fear, anguish”), from PIE *agh-es- (cf. Greek akhos “pain, grief”), from root *agh- “to be depressed, be afraid” (see ail). Current sense of “dread mixed with veneration” is due to biblical use with reference to the Supreme Being. Awe-inspiring is recorded from 1814.

Psa_4:4 Stand in awe (רָגַז ‘ragaz’), and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

רָגַז ‘ragaz’ means to shake or tremble in fear.

Psa_119:161 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe (פָּחַד ‘pachad’) of thy word.

Isaac Mozeson traces the English word awe back to the Hebrew word אור ‘ohr’ which means light.

“Sight and light infer perception. Correct perception leads to YiRAH (translated “fear” or “awe” and the source of AWE. (See the WR words from Resh.) Incorrect perception leads to Resh-Ayin, R[A]h, wrong – see WRONG.” (E-Word – Edenics)

The Beautiful and awe inspiring God

One of the words for beauty in Hebrew is יפה ‘yafah.’ The word pictures something that is breathtaking or perhaps awe-inspiring. יפה ‘yafah’ consists of the letters י ‘yod’ which means a hand, פ ‘peh’ which means the mouth, and ה ‘heh’ which means something revealed. Here in this word is the natural inclination of man to cover his hand with his mouth in amazement at a beautiful or miraculous thing (Job 21:5). Covering the mouth is a sign of silence (Judges 18:19) which occurs when one sees something “breathtaking” or awe-inspiring (Psalm 33:8). This gesture is also used in reference to astonishment.

Job 21:5 Mark me, and be astonished (שׁמם ‘shamem’), and lay your hand upon your mouth.

Psa 96:5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
Psa 96:6 Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
Psa 96:7 Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
Psa 96:8 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.
Psa 96:9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.

Exo 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious (אדר ‘adar’) in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

אדר ‘adar’ has the meaning of majestic, goodly, comely, beautiful.

Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear (εὐλάβεια ‘eulabeia’):
Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

εὐλάβεια ‘eulabeia’ means reverence, circumspect. Circumspect comes from the Latin ‘circumspectus’ which means to look around on all sides. ‘Circum’ is around and ‘specere’ means to look. In Hebrew, trembling and shaking is חול ‘chul’ which has the sense of twisting or spinning around. חגא ‘chaga’ also means to spin around in fear.

Exo 23:13 And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

Scripture speaks of Christ Jesus as יפה ‘yafah.’
Psa 45:2 Thou art fairer {יפה ‘yafah’} than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
Zec 9:16 And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.
Zec 9:17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty
{יפה ‘yafah’} ! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

The second word for beauty is צבי ‘tsevi’ which literally means a deer or gazelle as the deer/gazelle personifies gracefulness and beauty. Scripture likens Christ to a צבי ‘tsevi.’

Son 2:8 The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
Son 2:9 My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.

צבי ‘tsevi’} and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

Zec 9:17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Mic 7:17 They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee.
Mic 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
