Random Word – Hire of a Harlot

Random Word Hire of a Harlot

Today’s random word is אתנן ‘etnan’ which is speaking of the hire or the price paid for a harlot (Deuteronomy 23:18; Ezekiel 16:31, 34, 41).  This word is used in specific to the harlotry which Israel committed in turning away from YHWH to fornicate with false gods (Micah 1:7; Hosea 9:1).

There is a fascinating allusion to the Gospel found in this word אתנן ‘etnan’ and its relation to unfaithful Israel.  אתנן ‘etnan’ comes from the root word תן ‘tan’ which is translated as dragon in Malachi 1:3.  The meaning of  אתנן ‘etnan’ as the price of whore connects to the dragon as the original act of unfaithfulness occurred in the Garden of Eden when the dragon/serpent deceived Adam and Eve into disobeying God (Genesis 3).

YHWH was the husband to Israel (Isaiah 54:5) but due to Israel’s unfaithfulness in committing harlotry, they had to be divorced (Isaiah 50:1).  According to the Word, once divorce has happened and the wife has joined another, the former husband cannot remarry her (Deuteronomy 24:4).  Yet, YHWH promises to bring Israel back to Him (Jeremiah 3:1-14).  How can this be done?  The Husband must die and rise again (Romans 7:1-4).

When Messiah died on the cross, He took upon Himself the imagery of the dragon/serpent (John 3:14; Numbers 21:7-9).  Messiah took upon Himself the punishment of sin which began at the tree of knowledge of good and evil so that mankind might live and His bride be reconciled to Him.
