Biblical Definition – Gentile

“In the Bible, ‘Gentile’ (Hebrew: Goy גּוֹי / Greek: Ethnos ἔθνος) simply means ‘nation’ or ‘people.’ While the term often highlights the distinction between Israel and the other nations, the gospel breaks down this wall. Through Christ Jesus, Gentiles are grafted into the olive tree, becoming fellow heirs of the promises, part of the one new man, and full citizens in the Kingdom of God.”

Galatians 3.26

Gal 3:26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal 3:28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:29  And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

GEN’TILE, n. [L. gentilis; from L. gens, nation, race; applied to pagans.]

In the scriptures, a pagan; a worshipper of false gods; any person not a Jew or a christian; a heathen. The Hebrews included in the term goim or nations, all the tribes of men who had not received the true faith,and were not circumcised. The christians translated goim by the L. gentes, and imitated the Jews in giving the name gentiles to all nations who were not Jews nor christians. In civil affairs, the denomination was given to all nations who were not Romans.

GEN’TILE, a. Pertaining to pagans or heathens.

According to the above definitions, Jews and Christians considered unbelievers to be Gentiles.  Romans considered anyone not Roman to be a Gentile (most Jews and Christians).  In English then, the word gentile means an outsider…someone who is not a part of your group.

גּי  /  גּוי
gôy
BDB Definition:
1) nation, people (noun masculine)

גוי ‘goy’ (gentile)  is used in reference to the descendants of Abraham

Gen 17:4  As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations {גוי ‘goy’}.

גוי ‘goy’ is used in reference to Israel

Gen 35:11  And God said to him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations (קהל גוים ‘qahal goyim’ could also be translated “church of gentiles”) shall be from you. And kings shall go forth from your loins.

Eze 2:3  And He said to me, Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to the nations {גוי ‘goy’}, the rebelling ones who have rebelled against Me. They and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this day.

The phrase “to the sons of Israel, to the nations” is rendered:

Deu 32:43  Rejoice, O nations {גוי ‘goy’}, of His people; for He shall avenge the blood of His servants, and shall render vengeance to His foes, and shall have mercy on His land and His people.

In Hebrew this verse is rendered:

Deu 32:43  הרנינו גוים עמו כי דם־עבדיו יקום ונקם ישׁיב לצריו וכפר אדמתו עמו׃

גוים עמו ‘goyim amo’ can be translated as “gentiles His people”.

Speaking of the descendants of Ephraim

Gen 48:19  And his father refused and said, I know, my son, I know. He also shall be a people, and he shall become great. But his younger brother shall become greater than he, and his seed shall become the fullness of the nations {מלא־הגוים ‘melo ha`goyim’ – fullness of gentiles}.

This phrase ‘fullness of the nations’ (מלא־הגוים ‘melo ha`goyim’ – fullness of gentiles) is used by the Apostle Paul in reference to believers in Messiah.

Rom 11:25  For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
Rom 11:26  And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

Please notice in verse 26 that Paul states that the fullness of the gentiles is brought in to the olive tree so that ALL Israel will be saved.  He does not say so the gentiles can be saved alongside Israel.  Paul is connecting the גוים ‘goyim’
to the lost sheep of Israel.  When a person believes in Messiah they become Israel.  See Biblical Definitions – Israel.

Were Gentiles…Past Tense

Scripture speaks of those who are outside the covenant as gentiles and it is not looked upon as being a positive thing.  Believers who enter into covenant with the Most High in Messiah are not considered gentiles or of the nations any longer but are joined to the saints and the commonwealth of Israel.

Eph 2:11  Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
Eph 2:12  That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

Paul says above that the gentiles are without Messiah, strangers to the covenants and without God.

Gentiles in the past…carried away by dumb idols
1Co 12:2  Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

Notice that Paul separates believers in Messiah from the gentiles.
1Co 5:1  It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

The Gentles sacrifice to devils
1Co 10:20  But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

Gentiles do not know God
1Th 4:5  Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

If a person believes in Christ Jesus, they have entered the New Covenant and are considered Israelites that know God.

Jer 31:31  Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jer 31:34  And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Gentiles who become believers in Christ become a part of Israel

1Co 10:1  Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

In the above verse, Paul says to the believers in Corinth that all OUR fathers were under the cloud.  It is accepted that those in Corinth are considered to be ‘gentiles’.  Yet, Paul considers them to be family, the children of Israel.

Eph 3:6  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
Rom 11:16  Now if the firstfruit is holy, so also the lump. And if the root is holy, so also the branches.
Rom 11:17  But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree were grafted in among them, and became a sharer of the root and the fatness of the olive tree,

The gentiles believers aren’t a separate body/tree.  They join the same tree as the Jews, the Olive Tree of Israel.

Rom 11:18  do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, it is not you that bears the root, but the root bears you.
Rom 11:19  You will say then, The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.
Rom 11:20  Well! For unbelief they were broken off. And you stand by faith. Do not be highminded, but fear.
Rom 11:21  For if God did not spare the natural branches, fear that it may be He will not spare you either.
Rom 11:22  Behold, then, the kindness and severity of God: On those having fallen, severity. But on you, kindness, if you continue in the kindness. Otherwise, you will also be cut off.
Rom 11:23  And those also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in. For God is able to graft them in again.
Rom 11:24  For if you were cut out of the natural wild olive tree, and against nature were grafted into a good olive tree, how much more these being according to nature will be grafted into their own olive tree?
Rom 11:25  For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be wise within yourselves, that hardness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the nations comes in;
Rom 11:26  and so all Israel will be saved, even as it has been written, “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
Lev 19:33  And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.
Lev 19:34  But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Isaiah speaks of the gentiles that join themselves to God as being the same as Israelites and keeping the same Torah.  See Daily Tidbits 1/7/12 – One Law

Isa 56:6  Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
Gal 3:29  And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Eph 2:13  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:19  Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

The example of the woman from Canaan
Mat 15:22  And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
Mat 15:23  But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
Mat 15:24  But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Mat 15:25  Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
Mat 15:26  But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.
Mat 15:27  And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.
Mat 15:28  Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Through her faith in Messiah she was accepted and no longer considered a dog/gentile.

Dogs = Gentiles

There won’t be any “dogs” in the kingdom of Heaven
Rev 22:14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Rev 22:15  For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Eze 47:22  And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the strangers that sojourn among you, which shall beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.
Eze 47:23  And it shall come to pass, that in what tribe the stranger sojourneth, there shall ye give him his inheritance, saith the Lord GOD.

Deu 31:12  Assemble the people, men and women, and the little ones, and your alien who is within your gates, so that they may hear, and so that they may learn, and may fear Jehovah
your God, and take heed to do all the Words of this Law;

Jos 8:33  And all Israel, and its elders, and authorities, and its judges were standing on this side, the alien as well as the native, and on that of the ark, before the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

Diaspora

Israelites who were taken into exile due to their disobedience and idolatry were turned into ‘gentiles’.

Peter calls those in the Diaspora strangers
1Pe 1:1  Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

James calls those in the Diaspora the 12 tribes
Jas 1:1  James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes in the Dispersion, greeting:

In the book of John the Pharisees called those in the diaspora Greeks (Gentiles in the KJV)
Joh 7:35  Then the Jews said amongst themselves, Where is this One about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the Dispersion of the Greeks, and to teach the Greeks?

The northern house of Israel are the lost sheep who “became” gentiles

Fullness of the nations/gentiles
Rom 11:25  For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles (Genesis 48:19) be come in.
Rom 11:26  and so all Israel will be saved, even as it has been written, “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
Gen 48:14  And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.
Gen 48:15  And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,
Gen 48:16  The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
{grow into a multitude= וידגו לרב ‘vayidagoo lerov’ = multitude of fishes….Jeremiah 16:16=Matthew 4:19) Mtt 4:19…Mtt 10:6; 15:24
Gen 48:17  And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.
Gen 48:18  And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.
Gen 48:19  And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude
{מלו ‘melo’ – fulness, [hand-] full, multitude} of nations (גוים ‘goyim’ – nations, gentiles).

Ephraim was prophesied to become מלא־הגוים ‘melo ha`goyim’  the “fullness of the gentiles”.
Hos 7:8  Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people;
Amo 9:8  Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
Amo 9:9  For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations
{גוי ‘goy’}, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

Israel become not a people

Hos 1:4  And the LORD said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
Hos 1:6  And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
Hos 1:7  But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God
Hos 1:9  Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.

Gentiles know not God – Ephesians 2:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:15

Even though Israel would become a ‘no people’ and join in with the gentiles they would still be physically multiplied as the stars of heaven.

Hos 1:10  Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

In Deuteronomy, Moses speaks of Israel becoming a thousand times as much as they are at that time (Deuteronomy 1:11).  It is believed that at least 2 million Israelites came out of Egypt meaning that at least 2 billion people on the earth probably have direct descent to Israel.

It is Messiah who regathers His people
Hos 1:11  Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land

Paul connects the ‘gentiles’ to the “lo-ammi” of Israel
Rom 9:24  Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
Rom 9:25  As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
Rom 9:26  And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
Rom 9:27  Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
Rom 9:28  For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
Rom 9:29  And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
Rom 9:30  What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
Rom 9:31  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Rom 9:32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
Rom 9:33  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone
(Isaiah 8:14 says Jesus would be a stumbling stone to both houses of Israel) and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Isa 8:13  Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
Isa 8:14  And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Peter connects the Scriptures in Hosea to ‘gentiles’ who come to believe in Messiah as well.
1Pe 2:6  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone (Isaiah 6:13 Root, holy seed), elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
1Pe 2:7  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
1Pe 2:8  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
1Pe 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light
(Exodus 19:5)
1Pe 2:10  Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. …Hos 2:23

Hos 2:18  And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground (Acts 10): and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
Hos 2:19  And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.
Hos 2:20  I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD.
Hos 2:21  And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the LORD, I will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth;
Hos 2:22  And the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil; and they shall hear Jezreel.
Hos 2:23  And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.

FUTURE OF GENTILES

Jer 30:11  For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.
Jer 46:28  Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.
