Daily Tidbits 4/17 – Mathematics

Psa 71:15  My mouth shall tell (saphar – number, declare, count)of Your righteousness and Your salvation all the day; for I do not know the numbers (sephorah – number).

Wikipedia.org – Mathematics

“Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change.  Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objectsclick hereThe word “mathematics” comes from the Greek μάθημα (máthēma), which means learning, study, science, and additionally came to have the narrower and more technical meaning “mathematical study”, even in Classical times.

Its adjective is μαθηματικός (mathēmatikós), related to learning, or studious, which likewise further came to mean mathematical. In particular, μαθηματικὴ τέχνη (mathēmatikḗ tékhnē).”

Disciple/student is related to the Greek word μάθημα (máthēma)

‘Manthano’ is used in the Septuagint to translate the following Hebrew words.

G3129
manthano *    H502    alaph (learn, yoke, ox)
manthano     H3045    yada (know)
manthano     H3286    yaga (weary, tired)
manthano     H3925    lamad qal,pi (learn, goad)

manthano *    H502    alaph (learn, yoke, ox)

‘Alaph’ אלף, comes means to learn, it is a picture of the yoke of oxen where the older experiences ox is yoked to a younger inexperienced on in order to teach it how to pull a load.  ‘Alaph’ comes from the root ‘al’ אל,  which has the same meaning as ‘alaph’.

This is the Hebrew word for ‘God’, which means one who holds power or authority over others.  The God of the Hebrew was seen as the older ox that is yoked to His people in a covenant (אלה) relationship.

Mat 11:29  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, because I am meek and lowly in heart, “and you will find rest to your souls.” Jer. 6:16
Mat 11:30  For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

manthano     H3045    yada (know)

‘Manthano’ is also used to translate the Hebrew word, ‘yada’, to know.  This comes from the root:

דע, means to learn by visual observation.  This is the definition of ‘science’ as we know it today.  It is no coincidence, that mathematics is the foundation of all science.

“Newton’s view of mathematics is reflected in the title of Principia.  He considered mathematics to be the undergirding principles of Natural Philosophy, as science was then called.”

Temple at the Center of Time pg 16

“The revolution of science that Newton single-handedly achieved in Principia was primarily that the laws of motion and gravity, and the nature of space and time, had not manifested apart from his belief in the immutable truths of the Bible.  From its pages, Newton found the path towards discovery in the natural universe.  In his own words, the Bible was his source of inspiration for every theory that he conceived.  Newton believed that the code of civil and religious truth that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai also contained the physical laws of creation.”

The Jewish Mind pg 33-34 quoting the Genius of Vilna

“The rule is that all that was, is, and will be unto the end of time is included in the Torah, from the first word to the last word.  And not merely in a general sense, but as to the details of every species and each one individually, and details of details of everything that happened to him from the day of his birth until his end.”

This quote by the ‘Genius of Vilna’ contributed to Eli Rips finding the ‘Bible Code’ which is a mathematical cypher of the Torah where hidden messages are thought to be found in Equidistant letter sequences.  Rips believed that the code/cryptogram he discovered is one and the same with what Isaac Newton had diligently searched for.

All that we see points to Him.  All that we see with our natural eyes, all that we see with our ‘spiritual eyes.’

The Eye is the doorway to His ‘soul’.  The shadows of the Word and His Creation are there to lead us to the door/His eye.  To know Him intimately, as the little guy in His Eyeclick here, abiding under the SHADOW of His Wings.

Psa 17:8  Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

The next word that ‘manthano’ is used to translate is ‘ya’aph’ which links to the above verse.

manthano     H3286    ya’aph (weary, tired)

‘Ya’aph’ comes from the root ‘aph’ which is a picture of a bird overshadowing her chicks.

In the beginning, His Spirit moved upon the waters and brought forth the natural things that we see today.  In Hebrew, the act of ‘moving/hovering’ over the waters is like unto a bird overshadowing her chicks.  It is at this point that Elohim said let there be light and matter came forth into His creation.  The overshadowing of His wings and the light that came forth teaches that all of His creation/all of nature is embedded with His Image.  All of His creation was made to point to Him.

manthano     H3925    lamad qal,pi (learn, goad)

‘Talmid’ is the Hebrew word for ‘Disciple’click here.  A Disciple is a student of the Messiah, His ‘pupil’/little guy in His eye.  Connecting to the previous two words, ‘yada’ (know – door of the eye) and ‘ya’aph’ (under shadow of His wings).

The root of the word ‘lamad’ comes from ‘lam’

Ultimately, this is the purpose of numbers and all of creation, to lead mankind to the Good Shepherd who will lead us to the still waters in green pastures for eternity (Psalm 23).

Numbers & the Word

The Hebrew words for number and scroll/book are from the same root word. The Word is strongly associated with numbers and in fact each Hebrew letter is a number as well. Therefore the Holy Scriptures are words as well as numbers…

Hebrew letters=numbers.  It is easy to see why the word for number (mispar) is from the same root as Scroll (sepher).

From the root:

The parent root of ‘saphar’ is ‘saph’ which links to the above Greek word ‘manthano’ and the Hebrew words it translates in the LXX.

This is the root for lip/language which further connects the Word with Numbers

Numbers, the Seed, Manna

Gen 15:5  And He brought him outside and said, Look now at the heavens and count (ספר ‘saphar’) the stars, if you are able to count (ספר ‘saphar’) them. And He said to him, So shall your seed be.

Abraham’s seed was to be like the dust of the earth which can’t be counted, but a different Hebrew word was used to translate ‘count’ in this case

Gen 13:16  And I will make your seed (Seed =Galatians 3:16, 29) Messiah  as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can count (מנה ‘manah’) the dust of the earth, then your seed also will be counted (מנה ‘manah’).

This is the same root as the Hebrew word for manna

Messiah equates the manna/bread from heaven with Himself in John 6.  Manna is equated with the Word/davar

Exo 16:4  And YHWH said to Moses, Behold, I AM! Bread will rain from the heavens for you. And the people shall go out and gather the matter of a day in its day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in My Law or not.

The matter of a day in its day ‘davar-yom b’yom’

Deu 8:3  And He has humbled you, and caused you to hunger, and caused you to eat the manna, which you had not known, and your fathers had not known, in order to cause you to know that man shall not live by bread alone, but man shall live by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of YHWH.
