Prophecies of Messiah – Genesis 28:22: Jacob’s Pillar
Gen 28:18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
Gen 28:19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz* at the first.
Gen 28:20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
Gen 28:21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
Gen 28:22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth {Isaiah 6:13} unto thee.
Later, after Jacob came out of Padan Aram, God appeared to Him again and proclaimed his name as Israel.
Gen 35:9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
Gen 35:10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
Gen 35:11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
Gen 35:12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
Gen 35:13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
Gen 35:14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
Gen 35:15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
This pillar is a prophecy of Messiah Jesus and His body (1 Timothy 3:15; Hebrews 3:1-6; 1 Peter 2:5; Ephesians 2:11-22).
The Hebrew word for pillar is מצּבת ‘matstsebeth’ which literally means an ‘image.’
Messiah is the image of God
2Co 4:4 in whom the god of this age has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, so that the brightness of the gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.
The congregation of believers are to be the “image” of Messiah
Rom 8:29 because whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be the First-born among many brothers.
2Co 3:18 But we all with our face having been unveiled, having beheld the glory of the Lord in a mirror, are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord Spirit.
מצּבת ‘matstsebeth’ also means the stock of a tree. This word was used by the prophet Isaiah prophetically of Messiah – the Olive Tree of Israel.
Isa 6:13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance (מצּבת ‘matstsebeth’) is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed (Galatians 3:16) shall be the substance (מצּבת ‘matstsebeth’ ) thereof.
This prophecy is referring to the Olive tree of Israel (Jeremiah 2:21; 11:16-17; Romans 11:16-26). Who is Israel? Messiah and His body. Both Jew and Gentile (Galatians 3:26-29). Interestingly, Genesis 35:11 says a ‘company of nations’ shall come forth from Jacob. In Hebrew this is קהל גוים ‘qahal goyim’ which can also be translated as an assembly or church of gentiles.
The Messiah is Israel
Isa 49:3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
Isa 49:5 And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
This prophecy is speaking of Messiah. Messiah is the Servant Israel.
Isa 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved (ונצירי ‘v’netsri’ – Netsarim =followers of Messiah) of Israel. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation (‘yeshua’) unto the end of the earth.
The Holy Spirit makes it clear that this prophecy is speaking of Jesus our Lord.
Luk 2:29 Now, Master, You will let Your slave go in peace according to Your Word;
Luk 2:30 because my eyes saw Your Salvation,
Luk 2:31 which You prepared before the face of all the peoples;
Luk 2:32 a Light for revelation to the nations, and the Glory of Your people Israel.
Messiah Jesus is the Olive tree. He is the root. He is the source of life. The branches of Israel come forth from Him.
Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Joh 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
