The constellation of Leo pictures the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the conquering King who shall return to earth destroying His enemies to sit upon His throne. The Exalted King shines forth to judge the earth, destroying the serpent and pouring out His wrath. Leo is the Latin word for lion, the Syriac name of the constellation is ‘Aryo’ which means “rending lion” coming from the Hebrew word אריה ‘aryeh’ which means lion.
In the Denderah, the name of the constellation is ‘Pi Mentikeon’ which means the pouring out (as in God’s wrath). אריה ‘aryeh’ comes from the root word רה ‘rah’ which pictures flowing waters, as in the pouring out of God’s wrath (Isaiah 34:5, 7; Jeremiah 46:10). רוה ‘ravah’ comes from this root as well and is used in Scripture of His wrath. Scripture speaks of God’s wrath as a lion devouring its prey (Hosea 13:7-8) where Messiah destroys the enemy (Psalm 2:11-12; Revelation 19:15).
Isa 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
Isa 34:5 For my sword shall be bathed {רוה ‘ravah’} in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment.
Isa 34:6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea.
Isa 34:7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked {רוה ‘ravah’} with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.
Isa 34:8 For it is the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.
Jer 46:10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk {רוה ‘ravah’} with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is seen in Jacob’s prophecy for his son Judah, of whom Messiah would come (Hebrews 7:14; Luke 3:33; Romans 1:3).
Gen 49:8 Judah, may your brothers praise you, your hand be on the neck of your enemies. May the sons of your father bow themselves to you.
Gen 49:9 Judah is a lion’s whelp. My son, you have risen up from the prey; he stoops, he crouches like a lion; and like a lioness, who can rouse him?
Gen 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the lawmaker from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and the obedience of the peoples to him.
Gen 49:11 Binding his foal to the vine, and his ass’s colt to the choice vine, he washes his clothing in wine, and his covering in the blood of grapes.
Rev 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
It is interesting to note that the Scriptures speak of Messiah ‘springing out’ of Judah as the Arabic name of Leo is ‘Al Asad’ which means “the lion leaping forth as a flame”.
Heb 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
The wrath of God is spoken of as a devouring fire, where God shall roar as a lion (Joel 3:16; Amos 1:2).
Zep 3:8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.
The Hebrew word for flame is להב ‘lehav’ which also comes from the root לב ‘lev.’
The Hebrew word for flame is להב ‘lehav’ which also comes from the root לב ‘lev.’ Scripture links the judgment of the Lord with the flame {להב ‘lehav’} of devouring fire.
Isa 29:6 Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.
Isa 29:7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
Ariel in Hebrew is אריאל ‘ari`el’ which means lion of God.
Isa 66:15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames { להב ‘lehav’} of fire.
Another prophecy in Scripture which links the coming of the Messiah to pour out His wrath against His enemies as a lion is seen in Numbers 24:8-9.
Num 24:8 God who has brought him out of Egypt is for him like the lofty horns of the wild ox; he shall eat up the nations that are his foes, and shall break their bones in pieces, and shall pierce them through with his arrows.
Num 24:9 He has crouched; he has lain down like a lion, and like a lioness; who shall rouse him up? Blessed is everyone that blesses you, and cursed is everyone that curses you.
“Here is the great Lion in all the majesty of His fierce wrath — Aryeh, He who rends; Al Sad, He who tears and lays waste; Pi-mentekeon, the Pourer-out of rage, the Tearer asunder; Leon, the vehemently coming, the leaping forth as
a consuming fire. The chief star embraced in this figure, situated in the Lion’s breast, whence its mighty paws proceed, bears the name of Regel or Regulus, which means the feet which crush, as where it is said of the Messiah that He shall tread upon the serpent and asp, and trample the dragon under His feet (Ps. 91 : I3). The second star in Leo is called Denebola, the Judge, the Lord who cometh with haste. The third star is Al Giebha, the exalted, the exaltation. Other names in the sign are Zosma, the shining forth, the epiphany; Minchir al Asad, the punishing or tearing of him who lays waste; Deneb al Eced, the judge coming, who seizes or violently takes; and Al Defera, the putting down of the enemy.” {The Gospel in the Stars – Joseph Seiss}
The brightest star in Leo is Regulus, called the ‘King star,’ sits in the heart of the lion and has the meaning of treading the enemy under foot (Psalm 110:1; Hebrews 10:13).
Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Psa 110:2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
Psa 110:3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
Psa 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Psa 110:5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
Psa 110:6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
Psa 110:7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
Regulus was called βασιλίσκος ‘Basilískos’ by Ptolemy which means “little king”. Regulus is a Latin word which is a diminutive of ‘rex’ which means king. The Hebrew word for foot is רגל ‘regal’ which also means to trample under foot. The similarity between רגל ‘regal’ and Regulus is easy to see. Further connecting the foot/leg (רגל ‘regal’) and the King (Regulus) is Revelation 19:16 which speaks of Messiah Jesus having the name King of Kings written upon his thigh.
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Messiah Jesus, the King of Kings overcomes all His enemies.
Rev 17:14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and the ones with Him are the called and elect and faithful ones.
Messiah was victorious through the cross.
Col 2:15 having stripped the rulers and the authorities, He made a show of them in public, triumphing over them in it.
Every knee shall bow to Him.
Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Php 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Php 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Php 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Interestingly, the Hebrew word for bow is שחה ‘shachah’ which is a cognate of one of the Hebrew words for lion, שחל ‘shachal.’
The lion is called the king of the beasts and has since ancient times been a symbol of royalty. The Scriptures link the lion to kings in a number of places (Proverbs 19:12; 20:2; 1 Kings 10:19-20).
YHWH will defeat His enemies and rejoice over His people in love.
Joe 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
Zep 3:14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
Zep 3:15 The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.
Zep 3:16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.
Zep 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
It is through His love that we overcome.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not heavy.
1Jn 5:4 Because everything having been born of God overcomes the world, and this is the victory overcoming the world, our faith.
1Jn 5:5 Who is the one overcoming the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Rom 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The English word love comes from the Hebrew word לב ‘lev’ which means the heart. This is interesting to note as one of the Hebrew words for lion is לביא ‘laviy’ which comes from this root לב ‘lev.’ לב ‘lev’ literally means the “authority inside” as the heart is the ‘throne’ of man’s mind and pictures the Kingdom of heaven.
The eternal organs in our bodies are a . Our bodies are His Temple (Ephesians 2:21-22; 5:30; 1 Corinthians 6:19). In the book of Revelation (Chapter 4) John is shown a vision of the Throne of God. When our hearts are circumcised (Deuteronomy 10:15; 30:6; Jeremiah 32:39-40; Ezekiel 11:19-20, Colossians 2:11-13; Hebrews 4:11-14; Luke 24:31-32) God is enthroned (Romans 10:8-10). Around His throne are 4 living creatures (Revelation 4:6) which represents the 4 chambers of the human heart. Around the throne and the 4 living creatures are 24 elders (Revelation 4:4) representing the 24 ribs surrounding the human heart.
From the heart blood is pumped to the Lungs. The etymology of the English word ‘Lung’ traces back to the meaning of Light. In our bodies our lungs have 7 vascular bundles called nodes. These represent the 7 Spirits of God (Revelation 4:5; Isaiah 11:1-3) before the throne. These 7 Spirits are pictured in the earthly Tabernacle/Temple by the Menorah. The Menorah is a picture of the Tree of Life. The Light of the world.
Regulus has long been associated with the heart of Leo. The Greeks called it ‘Kardia Leontos’, the Romans ‘Cor Leonis’ and the Arabians ‘Al Kalb al Asad,’ all meaning heart of the lion.
“The Lyon’s herte is called of some men, the Royall Starre, for they that are borne under it, are thought to have a royall nativitie.” {Wyllyam Salysbury}
“The cleare and bright star, called the Star Royal, appearing in the breast of the signe Leo, Tubero mine author saith.” {Pliny}

Al Giebha means exaltation, from the Hebrew word גבה ‘gava’ which means to lift up something high. Interestingly, Al Giebha is located in the back of Leo and the word גבה ‘gava’ literally means the “high arch of the back when digging”.
Isa 5:16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted {גבה ‘gava’} in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.
Scripture speaks of Messiah being גבה ‘gava’
Isa 52:13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high {גבה ‘gava’}.
The Messiah shall be exalted, destroying His enemies.
1Sa 2:10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
Scripture speaks of exalting the Lord as King, worshiping at His footstool.
Psa 99:1 The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.
Psa 99:2 The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.
Psa 99:3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.

Psa 99:9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
Zosma means shining forth. This concept of shining forth is linked to the coming of the Lord.
Psa_80:1 To the chief Musician upon Shoshannimeduth, A Psalm of Asaph. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth {יפע ‘yapha’}.
Psa 80:2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.
יפע ‘yapha’ is used in reference to the Lord revealing Himself, bringing vengeance upon His enemies.
Psa 94:1 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew {יפע ‘yapha’} thyself.
Psa 50:1 A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.

Psa 50:5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
Psa 50:6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.

Denebola pictures the ‘Judge who comes with haste,’ it is the tail of the Lion. Denebola is a shortened form of ‘Deneb Alased’ which comes from the Arabic phrase ذنب الاسد ‘ðanab al-asad’ which means “tail of the lion”.
Frances Rolleston saw Denebola as a combination of two Hebrew words, דן ‘dan’ which means judge and בהל ‘bahal’ which means hasty (Ecclesiastes 7:9). Both דן ‘dan’ and בהל ‘bahal’ are associated with God’s wrath upon His enemies.
Psa 50:4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge {דּין} his people.
Psa 50:5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
Psa 50:6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.
Zep 1:14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth {בהל ‘bahal’} greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.
Zep 1:15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
Zep 1:16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.
Zep 1:17 And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.

Isa 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
Isa 13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
The English word tail comes from תלל ‘talal’ which is linked to the tassels on the corners of the garments of believers. תל ‘tal’ means to hang down and related to the word טלל ‘talal’ which means to cover a large area.
The four corners of the heavens from which YHWH will gather all Israel (Isaiah 11:12; Jeremiah 49:36; Matthew 24:31) are pictured by the corners of the טלית ‘tallit.’ The word Tallit is not used in the Scriptures but traces back to the word טל ‘tal’ which means a covering.
Mal 4:2 But to you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness shall rise up, and healing will be on His wings. And you shall go out and frisk like calves of the stall.
Zec 8:23 So says YHWH of Hosts: In those days ten men out of all languages of the nations shall take hold, and will seize the skirt of a man, a Jew, saying, Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.
Denebola is a part of the “Spring Triangle” in the stars which heralds in the Spring each year. The Spring Triangle consists of Denebola, Arcturus and Spica. Arcturus is a picture of the Shepherd, in the constellation of Bootes which speaks of the one who cometh with a sickle and sword. Spica is the BRANCH in the constellation of Virgo the virgin. Denebola means the judge/deliverer or tail of the lion in the constellation of Leo, the wrath of the King. When does the Judge come? At the Resurrection when His people are gathered unto Him and His enemies are destroyed.
Yet another connection to Leo and the coming of Messiah is the sickle which the constellation forms.
Rev 14:14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
Rev 14:15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
Rev 14:16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.
Rev 14:17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
Rev 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
Rev 14:19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.

The Decan constellations continue the story as the Hydra pictures the old serpent destroyed (Revelation 20:2), Crater depicts God’s cup of wrath poured out (Revelation 14:9-20; 16:19; Job 21:20; Psalm 75:8; Jeremiah 25:15-29) and Corvus displays the feast of the birds of prey on the carcasses of the Lord’s enemies (Revelation 19:17-18).
Hydra is a picture of the Old Serpent, meaning “he is abhorred”. Hydra traces back to the Greek word υδρος ‘hudros’ which means water snake. Scripture speaks of YHWH destroying this ‘water snake.’
Isa 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.
Isa 27:2 In that day sing ye unto her, A vineyard of red wine.
The brightest star in the heart of the serpent is called ‘Al Phard’ in Arabic meaning the separated or put away. Other stars in the constellation are ‘Al Drian’ which means the abhorred and ‘Minchar al Sugia’ which means “the piercing of the deceiver.”
Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Hydra is located under the feet of Leo, displaying the Messiah conquering the enemy (Isaiah 14:25; Psalm 108:13; Isaiah 63:6).
Crater is a picture of a cup, displaying the cup of God’s wrath upon the enemy. The word ‘crater’ comes from the Indo-European root ‘kere’ which means to mix or confuse. The cup of the YHWH’s wrath is full of mixture, to be poured out upon the wicked.
Psa 75:8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
Rev 14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
Rev 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
Rev 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
Psa 11:6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.
Psa 11:7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.
Job 21:20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Jer 25:15 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
Jer 25:16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
Jer 25:17 Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:
Jer 25:27 Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.
Jer 25:28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
Jer 25:29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
Corvus pictures the birds of prey, in particular the raven, which devour the wicked in the day of YHWH’s wrath (Revelation 19:17-18). In the Denderah, the name of this constellation is ‘Herna.’ ‘Her’ means “the enemy” and ‘Na’ means “breaking up or failing”.
The bright star in the eye of the raven in Arabic is called ‘Al Chibar’ which comes from the Hebrew word חבר ‘chaver’ which means to join together.
Rev 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
The star in the right wing of Corvus is called ‘Al Goreb’ which comes from the Hebrew word ערב ‘orev’ which means raven.
Pro 30:17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
