Disciple

Disciple

To be a disciple of the Lord means to be yoked to and walk with the Messiah.

H3928 למּד / למּוּד limmûd
From H3925 instructed: – accustomed, disciple, learned, taught, used.
H3925 למד lâmad law-mad’ A primitive root; properly to goad (Mtt 11:29), that is, (by implication)
to teach (the rod being an Oriental incentive): – [un-] accustomed, X diligently, expert, instruct, learn, skilful, teach (-er, -ing).

G3101 μαθητής mathētēs math-ay-tes’ From G3129; a learner, that is, pupil*: – disciple.

1Ch 25:8  And they made fall lots for duty, as in the rule, as the small, so the great, the one teaching with the pupil (תלמיד ‘talmid’).

The word pupil means a student but it also means the black part of the eye.  His disciples are those that are yoked with Him and walking closely with Him.  They are seeking that intimate relationship with Him, as the “little guy in His eye.“

Joh 8:31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
Joh 8:32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

His disciples CONTINUE in His Word. This word CONTINUE in Greek {μένω ‘menō’} was used in the Septuagint (LXX) to translate numerous Hebrew words. One of which was ישב ‘yashav.’  ישב ‘yashav’ means to dwell or to sit. This is what the word study means.  To sit at the feet of our Lord as He teaches us of His ways.

His Disciples walk in Truth

Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

His disciples are those that know the testimony (Jesus) and the Torah.
Isa 8:16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Isa 54:13 And all thy children shall be taught (DISCIPLED) of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Why do we have great peace? Because we are discipled in the Word
Psa 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

We are to disciple the nations. We must first be discipled ourselves…this is why it is so important to study the Word.

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach (DISCIPLE) all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching (DISCIPLING διδάσκω didaskō) them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

G1321 διδάσκω didaskō
Didasko was used to translate numerous Hebrews words from the TaNaKH into the Greek Septuagint (LXX)

didasko * 00502 alaph pi.
alaph means to be yoked to an older more experienced oxen.
Mat 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, because I am meek and lowly in heart, “and you will find rest to your souls.” Jer. 6:16
Mat 11:30 For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

didasko 00995 bin hi.
bin means to understand by discerning between two or more things. It comes from the same root word as the word for son (ben).
Isa 54:13 And all thy children shall be taught (DISCIPLED) of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

didasko 06567 parash pu.
Didasko was used to translate the word parash. This is the word used for the weekly Torah readings known as Parshot (parsha singular). The word means to spread things out clearly in order to been seen.

Studying the Scriptures through the Torah portions is a great tool for learning the deeper things of the Word. Many connections are seen that are not readily noticed when reading through the Word otherwise. This is how 1st century believers studied the Word together. They went through the Torah once in 3 (3 1/2 years). These readings have become known as the triennial-Torah portions.  The Torah portions are read in a cyclical method.  They are part of the cycles that God gives His people that keeps them walking in His way. Today, this custom is seen in Yearly Bible Readings. Cycling through the Word…

Being yoked with the Messiah is what makes us Disciples.  This is what Israel means.  Those who rule (סר ‘sar’) with Messiah, or to put it another way, those who are bound to Him.
