Daily Tidbits 5/13 – Gravity

daily tidbits gravity

gravity 5
Isaac Newton, who is credited with discovering the force of gravity, believed that gravity was useful in pointing man to their Creator.

“This most beautiful [gravitational] system of the sun, planets, and comets could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.”  {Principia – Isaac Newton}

“When I wrote my treatise [principia] about our [solar system], I had an eye on such principles as might work with considering men for the belief in a Deity; and nothing can rejoice me more than to find it useful for that purpose.”

“The revolution of science that Newton single-handedly achieved in Principia was primarily that the laws of motion and gravity, and the nature of space and time, had not manifested apart from his belief in the immutable truths of the Bible.  From its pages, Newton found the path towards discovery in the natural universe.  By his own words, the Bible was his source of inspiration for every theory that he conceived.“ {Temple at the Center of Time – David Flynn pg 16-17}

Gravity is one of the four forces in the universe, the”‘natural phenomenon by which all physical bodies attract each other”.  It is best described in Scripture in Colossians 1:17 & Hebrews 1:3.

Col 1:17  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Vincent Word Studies – Colossians 1:17

Consist (συνέστηκεν)
Cohere, in mutual dependence. Compare Act_27:28; Heb_1:3. For other meanings of the verb, see on Rom_3:5. Christ not only creates, but maintains in continuous stability and productiveness. “He, the All-powerful, All-holy Word of the Father, spreads His power over all things everywhere, enlightening things seen and unseen, holding and binding all together in Himself. Nothing is left empty of His presence, but to all things and through all, severally and collectively, He is the giver and sustainer of life…. He, the Wisdom of God, holds the universe in tune together. He it is who, binding all with each, and ordering all things by His will and pleasure, produces the perfect unity of nature and the harmonious reign of law. While He abides unmoved forever with the Father, He yet moves all things by His own appointment according to the Father’s will” (Athanasius).

Robertson Word Pictures – Colossians 1:17

Consist (sunestēken). Perfect active indicative (intransitive) of sunistēmi, old verb, to place together and here to cohere, to hold together. The word repeats the statements in Col_1:16, especially that in the form ektistai. Christ is the controlling and unifying force in nature. The Gnostic philosophy that matter is evil and was created by a remote aeon is thus swept away. The Son of God’s love is the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe which is not evil.

This connection to the love of God manifested in His Son is significant as this love was revealed on the cross.  This connection will be seen as this study progresses.

Heb 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

“A second reference, Hebrews 1:3, declares that Christ upholds all things by the word of His power. Uphold (Greek, fero) again describes the sustaining or maintaining of all things, including gravity. The word uphold means much more than simply supporting a weight. It includes control of all the ongoing motions and changes within the universe. This infinite task is managed by Christ’s almighty Word, whereby the universe itself was first called into being (Hebrews 11:3).” {Gravity – Donald B. DeYoung}

Colossians 1:17 & Gravity

by Don DeYoung

“Gravity holds us firmly on the ground and keeps the earth circling the sun. This invisible force also draws down rain from the sky and causes the daily ocean tides. It keeps the earth in a spherical shape, and prevents our atmosphere from escaping into space. It would seem that this everyday gravity force should be one of the best understood concepts in science. However, just the opposite is true. In many ways, gravity remains a profound mystery. Gravity provides a stunning example of the limits of current scientific knowledge.

Gravity is one of four known fundamental forces of nature:

Gravity is one of four known fundamental forces of nature. Note that gravity is by far the weakest of the four, yet it dominates on the scale of large space objects. As Newton showed, the attractive gravity between any two masses gets less and less as the distance between them gets greater, but it never quite reaches zero.

Therefore every particle in the entire universe actually attracts every other particle. Gravity is a long-range force in contrast to the strong and weak forces.

Magnetic and electric forces are also long-range, but gravity is unique in being both long-range, and always attractive, thus never canceling out (unlike electromagnetism, where the forces may either attract or repel).

Gravity and Scripture

Two Bible references are helpful in considering the nature of gravity and physical science in general. First, Colossians 1:17 explains that Christ is before all things, and by Him all things consist. The Greek verb for consist (sunistao) means to cohere, preserve, or hold together. Extrabiblical Greek use of this word pictures a container holding water within itself. The word is used in Colossians in the perfect tense, which normally implies a present continuing state arising from a completed past action. One physical mechanism used is obviously gravity, established by the Creator and still maintained without flaw today. Consider the alternative; if gravity ceased for one moment, instant chaos surely would result. All heavenly objects, including the earth, moon and stars, would no longer hold together. Everything would immediately disintegrate into small fragments.

A second reference, Hebrews 1:3, declares that Christ upholds all things by the word of His power. Uphold (phero) again describes the sustaining or maintaining of all things, including gravity. The word uphold in this verse means much more than simply supporting a weight. It includes control of all the ongoing motions and changes within the universe. This infinite task is managed by the Lord’s almighty Word, whereby the universe itself was first called into being. Gravity, the ‘mystery force’, which is poorly understood after nearly four centuries of research, is one of the manifestations of this awesome divine upholding.”

Einstein described gravity as the warping of space and time.  Brian Green, in his book Elegant Universe describes the fabric of space as flat until mass is entered which causes ‘ripples in a pond.’  Furthermore, matter is essentially a form of energy which in its most basic form is light, which came forth in the beginning and points to Messiah.  In the expanse of the heavens man sees this gravity causing mass in the natural in the sun.  The Light of the World is pictured by the physical light of our galaxy, the sun (Malachi 4:2; Psalm 84:11; 27:1).

The way in which gravity works is seen in the model of the planets revolving around the sun.

In the absence of any matter or energy, Einstein envisioned that space would be flat…A massive body like the sun, and indeed any body, exerts a gravitational force on other objects.  These links between gravity, accelerated motion, and curved space led Einstein to the remarkable suggestion that the presence of mass, such as the sun, causes the fabric of space around it to warp as seen in the next picture.

“A useful, and oft-quoted, analogy is that much like a rubber membrane on which a bowling ball has been placed, the fabric of space becomes distorted due to the presence of a massive object like the sun.  According to this radical proposal, space is not merely a passive forum providing the arena for the events of the universe; rather, the shape of space responds to objects in the environment.

This warping, in turn, affects other objects moving in the vicinity of the sun, as they now must traverse the distorted spatial fabric…Einstein has specified the mechanism by which gravity is transmitted: the warping of space.”

“The earth is kept in orbit around the sun because it rolls along a valley in the warped spatial fabric.  In more precise language, it follows a ‘path of least resistance’ in the distorted region around the sun.” {Elegant Universe pg 70}

This concept is pictured in the spiritual in the Book of Revelation.

The sun/light = the Lamb

Rev 21:23  And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, that they might shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it, even its lamp is the Lamb
Rev 14:4  These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones following the Lamb wherever He may go. These were redeemed from among men as a firstfruit to God and to the Lamb.

In modern Hebrew, gravity is called  כוח-המשיכה ‘koach hamsheykha.’  כוח ‘koach’ means strength, power, force.  God is כוח ‘koach’ (Psalm 31:4; 2 Samuel 22:33).  His power {כוח ‘koach’} is His love in Messiah (Ephesians 3:16-17) who died for ALL mankind (John 3:16).

What does המשיכה ‘hamsheykha’ mean?  המשיכה ‘hamsheykha’ comes from the root משך ‘mashakh’ which means to draw or pull, an apt description of gravity.

The root of this word משך ‘mashakh’ is מש ‘mash’ which has the meaning of fabric or silk.  This is fascinating as physicists have described space as a ‘fabric’ the ‘warping’ of which creates gravity.

משה ‘masha’ comes from this root מש and has the meaning of ‘draw out’ as well.

Psa 18:16  He sent from above, he took me, he drew {משה ‘masha’} me out of many waters.
Psa 18:17  He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

Exo 2:10  And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses {משה ‘Moshe’}: and she said, Because I drew {משה ‘masha’} him out of the water.

A further connection between gravity/משך ‘mashakh’ and the Messiah is seen in a related Hebrew word משח ‘mashach’.  In Hebrew, letters that have similar sounds such as ס ‘samek’ and ש ‘shin’ and כ ‘kaf’ and ח ‘chet’ are related and many times words which sound the same have similar and related meanings.

The word Messiah {משיח ‘mashiyach’} comes from משח ‘mashach.’

Notice that the root of משח ‘mashach,’ מח ‘mach’ means to draw out,  the same as משך ‘mashak ‘.  Another relation between משח ‘mashach’ and משך ‘mashak’ is the shofar.  משך ‘mashakh’ means the drawing out of something such as sound from a horn.  How were kings anointed in biblical times? The shofar/ram’s horn was sounded (1 Kings 1:34) and the very oil that was used for the anointing came forth from the horn (1 Samuel 16:1).

The English definition of Gravity:

This corresponds to the Hebrew word כבד ‘kavod.’

Gravity = כבד ‘kavod’ = weight, glory, liver.  What is the Glory of the Lord?  The Lamb of God (Revelation 21:23).  The liver is the organ of the body which cleanses the blood and was offered to God as a sacrifice in the Sacrificial system.  The Lamb of God, who is the glory/liver {כבד ‘kavod’} of God who takes upon the sins of the world…cleanses the blood (the life Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:11) of mankind.

Gravity & the Cross

if i be lifted up

The crucifixion is another connection between gravity and Messiah.

Joh 12:32  And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all to Myself

Messiah connected His suffering on the cross to the serpent on a pole

Joh 3:14  And even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
Joh 3:15  that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Messiah on the cross is what draws all mankind back to the Father, depicted in the natural as the ‘force of gravity’ that holds the universe together.  The crucifixion is also portrayed as a Menorah which points to Messiah as the Light of the world.  The light/matter that was introduced into the fabric of space/the waters.  In a previous study, the connection between the waters and sound is shown more detail in the study Messiah in the Torah – Genesis 1:2-5.  More on this connection to light below.

The Hebrew word כח ‘koach,’ which means power, has a numerical value of 28.  28 is also linked to the cross.  The letter ת is a picture of the cross.  ת ‘tav’ is spelled as תו which consists of ת’tav’ the 22nd letter of the Hebrew alphabet and ו ‘vav’ the 6th letter giving the total of 28.

The Greek word for Passover, πάσχα ‘pascha,’ is translated as Passover 28 times in the New Testament.  Messiah became our Passover on the cross (1 Corinthians 5:7; Isaiah 53:7; John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:19; Revelation 5:6, 12).

The תו ‘tav’ – Passover connection is further seen in Ezekiel 9.

Eze 9:4  And YHWH said to him, Pass through in the midst of the city, in the midst of Jerusalem, and mark a mark {תו ‘tav’} on the foreheads of the men who are groaning and are mourning over all the abominations that are done in her midst.
Eze 9:5  And He said to those in my hearing, Pass over in the city after him and strike. Do not let your eye spare, and do not have pity.

The Hebrew word for ‘pass over’ in verse 5 is עבר ‘avar.’

עבר ‘avar’ is the root of the word עברי ‘ivri’ which is translated as ‘Hebrew.’

Through His crucifixion, Messiah would reveal He is “

Joh 8:28  Then Jesus said to them, When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM; and from Myself I do nothing; but as My Father taught Me, these things I speak.

The Hebrew word for name is שם ‘shem’ which literally means one’s breathe or character.  What is the character of the Almighty?  Love (1 John 4:8).

The Hebrew word for love is אהב ‘ahav’ which is consists of the letters  אב ‘av’ which means father and the middle letter ה ‘heh’ which has the meaning of revelation.  The Father revealed.  In ancient Hebrew, the letter ה ‘heh’ was depicted as a man with outstretched arms, like unto Messiah on the cross. How was the love of the Father revealed?  Through the giving of His only begotten Son on the cross as an atonement for the sins of mankind (John 3:16).

It is God’s name/character of love that is written in the heads of His redeemed people (Revelation 22:4).  The prophet Ezekiel was shown that His mark is depicted in the letter ת ‘tav’ which was written in ancient times as the image of the cross (Ezekiel 9:4).

The Hebrew word for the Hebrew language is עברית ‘ivrit.’  עברית ‘ivrit’ comes from the root בר ‘bar’ which means ‘pure.’  Hebrew breaks down pictographically as thus:

ע ayin means to see
בר bet-resh is the word for Son
י yod is a hand
ת tav is a cross

The pictographs of the word עברית ‘ivrit’ means to ‘see the Son with hands on the cross.’  The Hebrew language was designed to reveal the Gospel.  It is through the work of Messiah on the cross that all mankind is brought back to the Father.  In the end, YHWH will return a pure language (Hebrew) that we might all serve Him with one consent (Zephaniah 3:9).

The number 28 is also displayed in the phrases ‘in YHWH,’ ‘in Him will I trust,’ and ‘beloved.’  The word for beloved (ידיד ‘yediyd’) literally means the bosom.  It is through the cross that Messiah gathered mankind “back to the bosom” of the Father (Isaiah 40:1-11).

Through the cross, Messiah gathers all mankind unto Himself (John 12:32) as the planets revolve around the sun (Revelation 21:23).  His Glory is revealed through this unification.

The unity we must seek is only found in Him.

Psa 86:11  Teach me Your way, O YHWH; I will walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name.

His Name=His Word/Character (Revelation 19:13).

His Word fills creation (Jeremiah 23:24).  The Word/Torah & Creation are linked.

Eph 1:23  which is His body: the fullness of the One filling all things in all;

1Co 8:6  but to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we by Him.

1Co 12:6  And there are differences of workings, but the same God is working all things in all.

Col 3:11  where there is no Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, foreigner, Scythian, slave or freeman, but Christ is all things and in all.

Messiah is the Glory of YHWH.

Heb 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Rev 21:23  And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

2Co 4:6  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

His Glory is upon the earth and heavens

Psa 148:13  Let them praise the name of YHWH; for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heavens.

Isa. 6:10
Joh 12:41  Isaiah said these things when he saw His glory, and spoke about Him.  (Referring back to Isaiah 6)

Gravity – Glory

The word ‘gravity’ comes from the Latin word ‘gravis’ which means heavy and is related to the word ‘gravitas’ meansing weight, heaviness or pressure.  ‘Gravis’ and ‘gravitas’ also refer to the dignity, presence or influence of a person/individual.  The corresponding word in Hebrew is כבד ‘kavod’ which means glory or honor.

Isaac Mozeson traces the word gravity back to the Hebrew word גבר ‘gavar’ which has the meaning of might, power, strength or force.  Scripture speaks of YHWH as גבר ‘gavar,’ (Deuteronomy 10:17; Isaiah 42:13) and גביר ‘gaviyr,’ which comes from this root word, means lord.

gavar
גבר ‘gavar’ comes from the two letter root בר ‘bar’ which is used in reference to the Messiah as the King in Psalm 2.

Psa 2:12  Kiss the Son {בר ‘bar’}, lest He be angry, and you perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Oh the blessings of all those who flee to Him for refuge!

This Son is the Lord

Psa 110:1  A Psalm of David. A declaration of YHWH to my Lord: Sit at My right hand, until I place Your enemies as Your footstool.

Psa 45:3  Gird Your sword on Your thigh, Mighty One {גבור ‘gibbor’}; with Your glory and Your majesty.
Psa 45:4  And ride prosperously in Your majesty, on the matter of truth and meekness and right, and Your right hand shall teach You fearful things.
Psa 45:5  Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies; peoples fall under You.
Psa 45:6  Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; the scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness.

Psa 89:19  Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty {גבור ‘gibbor’}; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

Isa 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty {גבור ‘gibbor’} God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

בר ‘bar’ is the source of the Greek word ‘baros’ which means weight, further connecting to gravity as gravity is the “agent that gives weight to physical objects”.

Energy, Power, Force, Light

כח ‘koach’ has the meaning of “power” or “energy”.

This connection between power and energy is seen in reference to the Word of God.

Heb 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful {ἐνεργής ‘energes’}, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Eph 1:19  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power {δύναμις ‘dunamis’} to us-ward who believe, according to the working {ἐνέργεια ‘energeia’} of his mighty power {ἰσχύς ‘ischus’ – force},
Eph 1:20  Which he wrought {ἐνεργέω ‘energeō’} in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
Eph 1:22  And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Eph 1:23  Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

In Ephesians 1:23, ‘filleth’ is translated from the Greek word πληρόω ‘plēroō’ which means to fill up or fill to the full as in water in a cup.  Recall that the word συνιστάω ‘sunistaō’ used in Colossians 1:17 in connection to gravity has a similar meaning.

“Extrabiblical Greek use of this word pictures a container holding water within itself.”

Further connecting these concepts is the Hebrew word צבא ‘tseva’ which means to stand, as in the walls of a tent which enclose that which is inside.  In the Septuagint, both συνιστάω ‘sunistaō’ and ἐνεργέω ‘energeō’ are used to translate this Hebrew word צבא ‘tseva.’

δύναμις ‘dunamis’ in Ephesians 1:19 points back to Hebrews 1:3, which as mentioned above, depicts gravity.

Heb 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power {δύναμις ‘dunamis’}, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

1Co 12:6  And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh {ἐνεργέω ‘energeō’} all in all.

In physics, a force is any influence that causes a free body to undergo an acceleration. Force can also be described by intuitive concepts such as a push or pull that can cause an object with mass to change its velocity.

In the Scriptures, the word force is used to translate numerous Hebrew words.  All have the same concept of power and strength.

As seen above, all 4 forces point back to YHWH. As seen in the study on the Messiah in the Torah: Genesis 1:6-8, it is the Messiah who holds everything together.

2Pe 3:5  For this is hidden from them by their willing it so, that heavens were of old, and earth by water, and through water, having subsisted (συνιστάω ‘sunistaō’ ) by the Word of God,

“The Force-Particle Duality: Every force in physics is transmitted by a particle….To understand vaguely where these force particles come from, let’s return to Dirac’s relativistic quantum mechanics, his theory of electrons.  We know that electrons radiate electromagnetic waves (light) when accelerated in an electromagnetic field.  Julian Schwinger, Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, and Richard Feynman combined Maxwell’s theory of electrodynamics and Dirac’s theory to form ‘QED’ quantum electrodynamics in 1948.  Electromagnetic radiation – light – shows up in quantum mechanics as the photon.  QED makes it clear that the photon is also the particle that transmits the electromagnetic force.”  {Instant Physics pg 194}

“According to Western science, the physical universe is held together by electromagnetic forces.  It is hypothesized that the same gravity that keeps the solar system operating also binds the protons, neutrons, and electrons of atoms.  Various forces may have different strengths and peculiar nuances, but the general principle remains the same.  Physicists continue to search for a universal formula by which to describe this process.  Electromagnetic force is clearly the most dominant feature of the human body, even though we cannot see it.  If we could somehow eliminate the space between the nucleus of the atoms that compose our body, all of the physical matter of the body would compact into something smaller than a grain of sand.” {God is a Verb pg 112}

All this is said to bring forth the concept that force = light.  His Word is holding all things together, the Light is that which moves all things.  Physics is the search for the logos (Word) and the kosmos (order).  What have physicists been led to see?  All things point back to His Word (logos) and His Light (order).

“It is the search for logos and kosmos that became the guiding doctrine of physics.”  {Instant Physics pg 9}

Logos = Davar (The Word = Messiah)

Kosmos = Order (which traces back to דבר ‘davar’ {Word} and אור ‘or’ {Light} in Hebrew)

Kosmos (κόσμος ‘kosmos) is used to translate a number of Hebrew words, one of which is תפארת ‘tipheret’ which can be translated into English as ‘Glory’.  Messiah is the Glory of YHWH.

Joh 12:41  Isaiah said these things when he saw His glory, and spoke about Him.

In the TaNaKH, the word most frequently translated as ‘power’, is the Hebrew כוח ‘koach’.

Psa 29:4  The voice of YHWH is in power (כוח ‘koach’); the voice of YHWH in majesty.

“Of all unifying concepts in the whole field of physical science, that of energy has proved to be the most significant and useful.  Not only has it played a major role in the development of science, but, by common consent, it is the physical concept which has had and still has the widest influence on human life in all its aspects.”  {Biblical Basis for Modern Science pg 223}

Energy & Light

Biblical Basis for Modern Science pg 227-228

“The Energy of Sound and Heat:
Sound is another form of energy, moving out as a wave from its source…’So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.  But I say, Have they not heard?  Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world’ (Rom. 10:17-18)

This passage is quoted by Paul from Psalm 19:4.  The latter part of the verse refers to the sun and calls attention to the heat energy radiated from the sun to all the earth, providing the warmth necessary for life to be sustained.  The same energy source also produces the thunder associated with the rains.  Thus the heat energy from the sun is almost as important as the light energy therefrom and, of course, we have already noted that heat is really a form of light….Therefore, heat energy, like sound energy, is pictured to us as analogous to the process whereby the Word of God through the testimony of Christians, both individually and corporately, is used to witness and convert.”  {Biblical Basis for Modern Science pg 227-228}

In the Beginning

“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing … Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.”   {Stephen Hawking – The Grand Design}

Hawking believes the law of gravity can be used to teach “Big Bang Cosmology” and rid the need for a Creator but in reality his connecting of gravity to the ‘beginning’ points to Messiah.

As mentioned before, the Hebrew word for power {כח ‘koach’} has the numerical value of 28 and links to the cross and the Passover Lamb.  28 is the number of Hebrew letters in Genesis 1:1, the first verse of the Bible.

Gen 1:1  בראשׁית ברא אלהים את השׁמים ואת הארץ׃

The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world found in the pictographic meaning of בראשית ‘bereshiyt’ (in the beginning).
