In Numbers 1, God commands Moses and Aaron to “lift the heads” and number the congregation of Israel by their families and fathers’ houses — every male twenty years and upward able to go to war. The Hebrew word for “number” is פקד (paqad), picturing a shepherd who oversees and visits his flock. Those numbered were also “marked” by name (נקב naqab — to pierce, appoint).
In this tidbit we explore how this wilderness census foreshadows the mark of God versus the mark of the beast. Being numbered by the Good Shepherd means being known by name, recorded in the Book of Life, and sealed with the blood of the Passover Lamb. The counterfeit is the beast’s numbering system — a false shepherd marking his flock for destruction. True numbering leads to inheritance in the Promised Land; the false leads to eternal loss. In Messiah, we are marked, known, and numbered among the redeemed.

Num 1:2 Lift the heads of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their heads;
Num 1:3 from a son of twenty years and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies.
Num 1:17 And Moses and Aaron took these men who were marked (נקב ‘naqab’ to pierce, perforate, bore, appoint) out by name.
Num 1:18 And they assembled all the congregation on the first of the second month. And they declared their births according to their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, by their heads.
Num 1:19 As Jehovah commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
The word for ‘number’ in verses 3 & 19 is from the Hebrew פקד ‘paqad’ which is the picture of a shepherd who oversees His flock. This is the essence of the mark of the beast vs. the Mark of God. The mark of the mark of the idol shepherd vs. the Good Shepherd.
We can have the mark of God and be in His image by walking in His Word and having Christ live through us (Galatians 2:20), or we can have the mark of the beast and be in the image of satan by walking in his “word” which is lawlessness (Ephesians 2:2-3Isaiah 30:8-11; 1 Peter 2:8). In reality, this ‘torah’ is the concept of ‘do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law,’ the ability of man to decide what is good or evil, right or wrong instead of relying on the Word to define the two.
The word for image in Hebrew is צל ‘tsel’ which means a shadow cast by an object forming an image. This is also seen in the concept of being under the shadow of His wings, which for the current study represents dwelling under the branches of the Tree of Life. The counterfeit, of course, is the tree of knowledge and the shadow/image it casts. The word צל ‘tsel’ is the combination of the letter צ ‘tsadi’ which is the picture of a hunter, a man lying on his side with a spear or bow or a man with a fishing pole. The ל ‘lamed’ is a the picture of a staff held by a shepherd which represents authority. Herein lies a beautiful picture of the mark concept in Scripture. The shepherd who hunts. The Messiah, the Good Shepherd, holds out a ‘fishing pole’ whose bait is the fruit of the tree of Life. The idol/worthless shepherd lies in wait as a lion seeking whom he may devour.

Num 1:2 Lift the heads (KJV take the sum) of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their heads;

1) to pierce, perforate, bore, appoint
Num 1:18 And they assembled all the congregation on the first of the second month. And they declared their births according to their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, by their heads.
Num 1:19 As Jehovah commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
Psa 87:5 And it shall be said to Zion, This man and that man was born in her; and the Highest Himself shall establish her.
Psa 87:6 In recording (ספר ‘saphar’ = counting) the peoples Jehovah shall mark down, This man was born there. Selah.
The prophecies speaking of the dividing of the land in the end times is a counterfeit of the allotting of land spoken of by the prophets (Eze 48 & Rev 20). As the above verses indicate, being numbered/marked by God in the wilderness was associated with the dividing of the land at that time. 1948 is a counterfeit of the regathering but is just a foreshadowing of things to come. The adversary seeks to appear as the savior of the world and will bring about a false kingdom appearing as the Kingdom of Heaven along with the mark of the beast which will he will attempt to make look like the mark of God. Along with this kingdom will come a dividing of the land with a numbering of the peoples…a counterfeit Zion. See Counterfeit study
The mark of the beast being the antithesis to the mark of God (the Torah) is further emphasized by delving into the meaning and usage of the word mark in Aramaic Peshitta.
Lamsa Aramaic Bible
Rom 8:29 He knew them in advance and he marked (προορίζω ‘proorizō’ – predestined) them with the likeness of the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren.
Again the connection to the mark and the image. The image of the Son vs. the image of the beast.
Lamsa Aramaic Bible
Eph 1:4 Just as from the beginning he has chosen us through him, before the foundation of the world, that we may become holy and without blemish before him.
Eph 1:5 And he marked us with his love to be his from the beginning, and adopted us to be sons through Jesus Christ, as it pleased his will.
King James Version
Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
The chosen people are marked with the mark of God…those who keep the Torah (Law of Christ) and the testimony (belief in Christ Jesus Revelation 12:17). Those with the mark of the beast are those who reject Messiah Jesus and according to the Scriptures are already antichrists (1Joh 2:18).
Lamsa Aramaic Bible
Eph 1:11 By whom we have been chosen, as he had marked (προορίζω ‘proorizō’ – predestinated) us from the beginning so he wanted to carry out everything according to the good judgment of his will:
This connection of predestination and being marked is connected by the heavenly books.
Psa 56:8 You have counted my wandering; O put my tear in Your bottle; are they not in Your Book?
Psa 139:16 Your eyes saw my embryo; and in Your book all my members were written the days they were formed, and not one was yet among them.
Mal 3:16 Then those fearing Jehovah spoke together, each man to his neighbor. And Jehovah gave attention and heard. And a Book of Remembrance was written before Him for those who feared Jehovah, and for those esteeming His name.
The true mark/sign of God
The blood
Exo 12:13 And the blood shall be a sign to you, on the houses where you are. And I will see the blood, and I will pass over you. And the plague shall not be on you to destroy, when I strike in the land of Egypt.
This is connected to the book of Ezekiel and the mark of the righteous
Eze 9:4 And Jehovah said to him, Pass through in the midst of the city, in the midst of Jerusalem, and mark a mark on the foreheads of the men who are groaning and are mourning over all the abominations that are done in her midst.
Eze 9:5 And He said to those in my hearing, Pass over in the city after him and strike. Do not let your eye spare, and do not have pity.
It is the blood of Messiah that marks us as His own
Rev 1:5 even from Jesus Christ the Faithful Witness, the First-born out of the dead, and the Ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him loving us and washing us from our sins by His blood,
Rev 1:6 and made us kings and priests to God, even His Father. To Him is the glory and the might forever and ever. Amen.
The blood is associated with Passover and unleavened bread
1Co 5:7 Then purge out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For also Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us.
Unleavened Bread is also a sign/mark of God, a shadow which points to Christ Jesus (Colossians 2:16-17).
Exo 13:6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.
Exo 13:7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
Exo 13:8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
Exo 13:9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD’S law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.
Leavened bread = hypocrisy = being clothed in the filthy garments of man…ie the man of sin. Leaven also comes from the word:
This is what Paul refers to in his letter to the Corinthians were he says to get rid of the leaven of wickedness. Paul used the word:

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary: Wicked
WICKED, a. [The primary sense is to wind and turn, or to depart, to fall away.]
Here wickedness is connected with leavened bread that is twisted and turned in a kneading bowl.
A related word in Hebrew is:
Twisting of the Scriptures
2Pe 3:15 And think of the long-suffering of our Lord as salvation, as also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him;
2Pe 3:16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the unlearned and unsettled pervert {στρεβλόω ‘strebloō’}, as also they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Thayer Definition:
1) malignity, malice, ill-will, desire to injure
2) wickedness, depravity
2a) wickedness that is not ashamed to break laws
3) evil, trouble
This concept of wickedness being equated with lawlessness is seen in how the following verse in translated into the English.
2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked (ἄνομος ‘anomos’ – literally without law) be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
Jay P. Green Literal Version
2Th 2:8 And then “the Lawless One” will be revealed, “whom” “the Lord” “will consume” “by the spirit of His mouth,” and will bring to nought by the brightness of His presence. Isa. 11:4
Notice that the lawless one, the man of sin is pictured by a twisted cord. This is yet another link to the changing of DNA being the mark of the beast.
Sabbaths, shadows which point to Christ (Colossians 2:16-17)
Exo 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
Exo 31:14 And you shall keep the Sabbath, for it is holy for you; the profaners of it dying shall die; for everyone doing work in it, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of his people.
Exo 31:15 Work may be done six days, and on the seventh day is a sabbath of rest, holy to Jehovah; everyone doing work on the Sabbath day dying shall die.
Exo 31:16 And the sons of Israel shall observe the Sabbath, to do the Sabbath for their generations; it is a never ending covenant.
Exo 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
Creation versus Evolution is associated with the mark as well. Evolution is a big part of the strong delusion to bring forth the mark of the beast as mankind will once again have to face the temptation of the serpent in the garden at the tree of knowledge…ye shall be as gods….Homo noeticus, supermen. All of creation points to Messiah Jesus. Everywhere we look there are shadow pictures that point to Him. The adversary seeks to take these shadows and pervert their meanings and apply them to himself.
The other aspect of the sabbath is redemption (Deuteronomy 5:15). What is the counterfeit? A false redemption of mankind through the mark of the beast. In Hebrew the word for redemption is פדת ‘padut’ which means to bring back to an original state.
פד ‘pad’ means to bring back to an original state. When the letter ת ‘tav’ is added it means that redemption comes through the cross/covenant of Messiah Jesus.
This is what redemption is, to bring back man to the state of Adam before he fell. This can only be done through Messiah Jesus who is the tree of life. In the end, the man of sin is going to offer redemption through the tree of knowledge…’ye shall not surely die’, yet this is going to lead to eternal damnation. The sons of God are those who are adopted and redeemed through Messiah Jesus (Romans 8:11-39) The adversary is going to offer mankind to become one with the fallen sons of God who come down from heaven offering to mix with mankind just as they did in the days of Noah (Matthew 24:37).
Looking at the marks/signs of God there are always counterfeits. Instead of the Torah/Word of God there is religious ‘law’/dogma.
Commandments
Deu 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
Deu 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Deu 6:8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
Deu 6:9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
Deu 11:18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
Redemption of the 1st born…pointing back to Passover and especially referring to Messiah Jesus. At the time of the end when the mark of the beast is instituted, at the same time the mark of God will be in the foreheads of the 144,000 who are the firstfruits/firstborn.
Exo 13:15 And it happened when Pharaoh hardened himself against sending us away, Jehovah killed every first-born one in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of men even to the first-born of animals. On account of this I sacrifice to Jehovah every one of the males opening the womb, and I redeem every first-born of my sons.
Exo 13:16 And it shall be for a sign on your hand, and frontlets between your eyes. For Jehovah brought us out from Egypt by the might of His hand.
Rev 14:1 And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion! And with Him were a hundred and forty four thousands, with the name of His Father having been written on their foreheads.
Rev 22:4 And they will see His face; and His name will be on their foreheads.
His Name is the Word
Rev 19:13 and having been clothed in a garment which had been dipped in blood. And His name is called The Word of God.
We are marked by the Name/Torah/Jesus
Rev 7:3 Do not harm the earth, nor the sea, nor the trees, until we seal the slaves of our God on their foreheads.
Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of those having been sealed: one hundred forty four thousands, having been sealed out of every tribe of the sons of Israel:
Rev 14:1 And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion! And with Him were a hundred and forty four thousands, with the name of His Father having been written on their foreheads.
Rev 14:2 And I heard a sound out of Heaven, as a sound of many waters, and as a sound of great thunder. Also I heard a sound of harpers harping on their harps.
Rev 14:3 And they sing as a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders. And no one was able to learn the song except the hundred and forty four thousands, those having been redeemed from the earth.
Rev 14:4 These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones following the Lamb wherever He may go. These were redeemed from among men as a firstfruit to God and to the Lamb.
Rev 14:5 And no guile was found in their mouth, for they are without blemish before the throne of God.
Exo 8:23 And I will put redemption (פדת ‘pedut’ KJV distinction) between My people and your people. This miracle shall be for tomorrow.
Brought back to an original state. A sinless state. Like the 2nd Adam.
1Jn 3:1 See what manner of love the Father has given us, that we may be called children of God. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now we are the children of God, and it was not yet revealed what we shall be. But we know that if He is revealed, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.
We shall be in His image. The seed of the serpent will be in his image. This is what the mark of the beast is. The Sons of God (Romans 8) will be clothed in the garments of righteousness and salvation (ישועה ‘yeshuah’ – source of the name Jesus). The seed of the serpent will be clothed in the garments of the serpent.
The 144,00 are the firstborn, the priests…redeemed from the earth.
The “distinction” is seen in the end
Mal 3:16 Then those fearing Jehovah spoke together, each man to his neighbor. And Jehovah gave attention and heard. And a Book of Remembrance was written before Him for those who feared Jehovah, and for those esteeming His name.
Mal 3:17 And they shall be Mine, says Jehovah of Hosts, for the day that I will make up My treasure. And I will pity them as a man has pity on his son who serves him.
Mal 3:18 Then you shall again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who does not serve Him.
Marked and Chosen
Rom 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, that is, the redemption of our bodies.
Rom 8:24 For we live in hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for if we see it, why should we yet hope?
Rom 8:25 But if we hope for that which we do not see, then do we wait for it in patience.
Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our weaknesses: for we do not know what is right and proper for us to pray for: but the Spirit prays for us with that earnestness which cannot be described.
Rom 8:27 And he who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, for the Spirit prays for the saints according to the will of God.
Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:29 He knew them in advance and he marked them with the likeness of the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren.
Rom 8:30 Moreover, those he did mark in advance, he has called, and those he has called, he has declared righteous, and those he has declared righteous, he has glorified.
Zion
Psa 132:13 For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.
Zion is the habitation of the Most High. This is speaking of the Land & the People.
2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Here we see the human body as a representation of the Temple of God. Not only does the adversary want the land of Zion and the Temple, he wants our bodies.
Psa 87:5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.
Isa 51:16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.
H6726 ציּון tsîyôn tsee-yone’
The same (regular) as H6725; Tsijon (as a permanent capital), a mountain of Jerusalem: – Zion.
H6725 ציוּן tsîyûn tsee-yoon’
From the same as H6723 in the sense of conspicuousness (compare H5329); a monumental or guiding pillar: – sign, title, waymark.
Zion comes from the following root

As seen in Mark of the Beast part 1, the word for ‘mark’ pictures a traveler that is following a mark to arrive at a destination. This what Zion is. There is true Zion and there is false Zion. True Zion points the way to Christ Jesus. False Zion points the way to the antichrist. (Matthew 7:13)
His disciples are a picture of definition of Zion
Isa 8:16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
Isa 8:17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
Isa 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs (אות ‘oht’ – flag, beacon, monument) and for wonders (מופת ‘mophet’ – conspicuousness, miracle, sign, wonder) in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
מופת ‘mophet’ comes from the root פת ‘pat’ which is the word for the female’s privy, which connects to the idea of giving birth, which is a miracle.
Rev 12:1 And a great sign was seen in the heavens, a woman having been clothed with the sun, and the moon was underneath her feet; and on her head a crown of twelve stars;
Sign = Zion…the birth of Zion, the manchild in the image of Messiah Jesus…what is the counterfeit? מופת ‘mophet’ is also used in a negative sense in Scripture, in specific in Deuteronomy 13:1-2 which speaks of a false prophet whose miracles (מופת ‘mophet’) come true, yet leads Israel into the worship of other gods. This is the essence of the strong delusion (2 Thessalonians 2:11; Matthew 24:24; Revelation 12:9; 13:13-14; 19:20.) The strong delusion comes upon those who do not love the Truth (the Word) (2 Thes. 2), this delusion is so strong that even the elect could be deceived (Mat. 24:24). The deception is caused by the dragon (Rev. 12:9), who gives his power to the beast (Rev. 13:2) who takes this power to lead astray mankind (Rev. 13:13-14). Those who are lead astray received the mark (Rev. 19:20).
As seen above, Zion is a picture of nomads (Psalm 39:12; 1 Peter 2:11) walking in the desert towards a mark.
Zion = The bride in the wilderness (Revelation 12:14). In the desert is where dragons reside (Deuteronomy 8:15). This is the place of warfare between the seeds (Genesis 3:15; Luke 10:19. It is only through abiding under the shadow of His Wings (Psalm 91) that we can overcome these enemies and enter the Kingdom.
Zion comes out of Babylon (Zechariah 2:7) which is linked to the wilderness as it will be a habitation of unclean creatures of the desert (Isaiah 34:13; Revelation 18:2).
In the wilderness we survived by the water from the rock and the manna from heaven, both of which represent the Word. It is when men reject this Word/manna that they will fall for the strong delusion.
Num 21:5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul hates this light bread.
Num 21:6 And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people; and they bit the people, and many people of Israel died.
1Co 10:9 Neither test Christ, as some of them tried Him, and perished by serpents.
Jer 8:9 The wise are ashamed; they are terrified and are captured. Behold, they have rejected the Word of Jehovah, and what wisdom is theirs?
Jer 8:17 For behold, I will send serpents among you, vipers for which there is no charm; and they will bite you, says Jehovah.
Because they reject His Word (Living Waters) they are given wormwood to drink.
Jer 9:13 And Jehovah says, Because they have forsaken My Law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice, and have not walked in it;
Jer 9:14 but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them;
Jer 9:15 so Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel, says this: Behold, I will feed them, this people with wormwood, and make them drink poison waters.
Jer 23:15 So Jehovah of Hosts says this concerning the prophets: Behold, I will feed them wormwood, and make them drink poisonous water, for ungodliness has gone forth from the prophets of Jerusalem into all the land.
Jer 23:16 So says Jehovah of Hosts, Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you; they make you vain; they speak a vision of their own heart, not out of the mouth of Jehovah.
Jer 23:17 They say to those who despise Me, Jehovah has said, You shall have peace. And they say to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, Evil shall not come on you.
Jer 23:18 For who has stood in the counsel of Jehovah, and has seen and heard His Word? Who has listened to His Word and heard?
Jer 23:19 Behold, the tempest of Jehovah has gone forth in fury, even a whirling tempest. It will whirl on the head of the wicked.
Jer 23:20 The anger of Jehovah shall not turn back until He has executed, and until He has set up the purposes of His heart. In latter days you shall understand it perfectly.
Deu 32:31 For their rock is not our Rock, even our enemies being judges.
Deu 32:32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and their grapes of the fields of Gomorrah, grapes of gall; they have bitter clusters.
Deu 32:33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, and the cruel venom of asps.
Wormwood = poison waters. As seen in part 2 of the mark of the beast series, this points to 666 and a poison book…the Oral law. This comes from the Harlot of Babylon (Proverbs 5:3-4), from whence Judaism comes (Matthew 23:33).
Believers in Messiah are the CHOSEN PEOPLE who are MARKED with the MARK OF THE LORD and will receive the INHERITANCE promised to Abraham’s Seed. The counterfeit is the false chosen people, the mark of the beast, the false inheritance.
Lamsa Aramaic Bible
Eph 1:4 Just as from the beginning he has chosen us through him, before the foundation of the world, that we may become holy and without blemish before him.
Eph 1:5 And he marked us with his love {His love is His Son, His Word…this is what the Mark of God is} to be his from the beginning, and adopted us to be sons through Jesus Christ, as it pleased his will.
King James Version
Eph 1:11 in whom we also have been chosen to an inheritance, being predestinated (Aramaic – mark) according to the purpose of the One working all things according to the counsel of His own will,
The Shema, is the definition of love.
Mat 22:37 And Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Deut. 6:5
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Lev. 19:18
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments all the Law and the Prophets hang.
The Shema comes from Deuteronomy 6 which is to be between the eyes and on the hand.
Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel, Jehovah our God is one Jehovah.
Deu 6:5 And you shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
Deu 6:6 And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart.
Deu 6:7 And you shall teach them to your sons, and shall speak of them as you sit in your house, and as you walk in the way, and as you are lying down, and as you are rising up.
Deu 6:8 And you shall bind them for a sign on your hand; and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.
Deu 6:9 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates.
