Hebrew Origins of English – Swerve

Hebrew Origins of English Swerve
The English word ‘swerve’ traces back to the Hebrew word סור ‘sur’ which means to turn aside from a straight line or course, to “swerve”.  We see this concept depicted in Deuteronomy 2:27 where Israel promised Sihon the King of Heshbon that they wouldn’t turn (סור ‘sur’) to the right hand or the left on their trip through their land.

As believers, we are commanded not to “swerve” (סור ‘sur’) from the straight paths of His Word.

Deu 5:32  Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

Deu 11:16  Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

Deu 28:14  And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Jos 23:6  Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

Pro 4:26  Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Pro 4:27  Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

We stay on the right path by following our Shepherd.

Psa 23:1  A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psa 23:2  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
Psa 23:3  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Psa 5:8  Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.

Psa 143:8  Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
Psa 143:9  Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.
Psa 143:10  Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

Pro 8:20  I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:

Isa 42:16  And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

When we turn aside from His paths of righteousness, we are walking in rebellion/apostasy.  סור ‘sur’ is even translated as such:

Hos 7:14  And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel {סור ‘sur’} against me.
Jer 5:23  But this people hath a revolting {סרר ‘sarar’} and a rebellious heart; they are revolted {סור ‘sur’} and gone.

סור ‘sur’ comes from the root word סר ‘sar’ which means a ruler.

sar

The name Israel comes from this word.  Israel can either rule with God, or rebel from God.  There are only two choices.  Blessing or curse, life or death.  We can eat from the Tree of Life who is Messiah, or from the tree of knowledge of good and evil which is religion.

Deu 11:26  Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;
Deu 11:27  A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:
Deu 11:28  And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out {סור ‘sur’ } of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

Joh 15:1  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Joh 15:3  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Joh 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:6  If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Joh 15:7  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Joh 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Joh 15:9  As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
Joh 15:10  If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

Messiah Jesus is the Way (the straight path) to the Father.

Joh 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Psa 67:2  That Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation (Heb. ‘yeshuah’) among all nations.
