Israel means one who overcomes/prevails with God.

Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Rev 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Rev 2:26 And the one overcoming, and the one keeping My works until the end, “I will give to him authority over the nations,”
Rev 2:27 and “He will shepherd them with an iron staff” (they are “broken to pieces like clay vessels”), as I also have received from My Father. Psa. 2:8, 9

How do we overcome?

Not all Israel is Israel

Rom 9:6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

Rom 9:8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Gal 6:16 And as many as shall walk by this rule, peace and mercy be on them and on the Israel of God.

Paul states that the literal descendants of Israel will be as numerous as the sea, yet only a remnant will be saved.

Rom 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

Moses prophesied that Israel would become billions. At this time Israel was at least 2 million+ strong. Multiplying that number by a thousand would yield 2 billion+.

Deu 1:10 YHWH your God has multiplied you, and, behold, today you are as the stars of heaven for multitude.
Deu 1:11 May YHWH the God of your fathers add to you a thousand times more than you are, and bless you as He has spoken to you!

The branches of Israel are cut off due to disobedience and idolatry

Jer 11:16 The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
Jer 11:17 For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.

Israel became a strange vine…Without being grafted back into the

Jer 2:21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly a true seed. How then have you turned into the deviant shoots of an alien vine to Me?

John the Baptist warned the Jews of his days that they can’t trust in their pedigree.

The only way to be grafted back into the Olive of Israel is through faith in the Messiah.

The process of grafting branches into a stock is called scion and is pronounced ‘zion.’ This is who the true Zion is. The people of YHWH in Messiah.

Not all Israel is Israel…ALL of Israel was cut off of the Olive Tree, only by faith in Messiah Jesus are we grafted in and become the “new” Israel as YHWH has broken down the vessel of Israel and reformed it into a new vessel of redeemed Israelites by faith. The Almighty did not do away with Israel and create a “church” (the church IS Israel), He is still working in covenant relationship with Israel. The two houses of Israel are those in the new covenant.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, says YHWH, that I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
Jer 31:32 not according to the covenant that I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt (which covenant of Mine they broke, although I was a husband to them, says YHWH).
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will cut with the house of Israel: After those days, declares YHWH, I will put My Law in their inward parts, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall no longer each man teach his neighbor, and each man his brother, saying, Know YHWH. For they shall all know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest of them, declares YHWH. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sins no more.
Jer 31:35 So says YHWH, who gives the sun for a light by day, the laws of the moon, and the stars for a light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar, YHWH of Hosts is His name.
Jer 31:36 If these ordinances depart from before Me, says YHWH, the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before Me forever.
Jer 31:37 So says YHWH, If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be searched out, I will also reject all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, declares YHWH.

YHWH has not rejected Israel. He has given them a chance to be grafted back into the Olive Tree. They must however go through Messiah. Messiah is Israel. Without Him literal descendants of Abraham are dried branches without life.

Isa 49:3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
Isa 49:5 And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
Isa 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes(H7626) of Jacob, and to restore(shub, lead back in repentance) the preserved(v’netsri-the branches/netsarim – origin of the name Christian) of Israel.I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation (H3444 yeshua) unto the end of the earth.

Example of Moses

Moses is perhaps the greatest picture of Messiah in the Scriptures. YHWH stated He was going to raise up Israel again through Moses but Moses prayed for them that He would be merciful to them. After YHWH cut off the branches of the olive tree and broke down the potter’s vessel to reform Israel, He ‘recreated’ Israel through Messiah.

Exo 32:10 And now leave Me alone that My anger may glow against them, that I may consume them. And I will make you a great nation.
Num 14:11 And YHWH said to Moses, Until when will this people despise Me? And until when will they continue not to believe in Me for all the signs I have done in its midst?
Num 14:12 I shall strike it with pestilence and dispossess it. And I will make you a nation greater and mightier than it.

Fleshly Israel

The Olive Tree is Jesus, when we are grafted into Him we partake of His divine nature. We become the Israel of God.

Israel= His Disciples

The word סר ‘sar’ means one who turns which is the root of the word for prince and is associated with the yoke and learning. Discipleship and being an Israelite are intimately connected together.

Disciple comes from the Hebrew word

G3101 μαθητής mathētēs math-ay-tes’ From G3129; a learner, that is, pupil: – disciple.

Pupil=apple of the eye. Israel is the apple of YHWH’s eye.
Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.click here

Jewish thought also backs up this thinking.

“When Israelites do the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, they are called sons; but when they do not do His will, they are not called sons.”

Being an Israelite is by faith. This can be seen in the examples of mixed multitude who came out of Egypt. Those who left Egypt did so by faith (Exodus 14:31). The Israelites who stayed behind in Egypt were still of Israel but they were not the chosen (Deuteronomy 7:6-Exodus 19:5-6). As Paul says, they are not all Israel, which are of Israel.

Those gathered at Mt. Sinai were called the house of Jacob/Children of Israel.

Exo 19:3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

Literal descendants of Jacob & a mixed multitude came out of Egypt.

Exo 12:37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
Exo 12:38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

Some say the mixed multitude in Exodus 12:38 is speaking of non-literal Israelites and some say the mixed multitude is speaking of unbelievers who were looking for a free trip out of Egypt. Either way, at Mt. Sinai a distinction was not made between literal descendants of Israel and ‘goyim/gentiles.’ Those who believed and put the blood of the lamb on the doorposts were a part of the House of Jacob/Israel.

Caleb was the son of Yephunneh who was a Kenezite, not of Jacob’s stock.

Num 14:24 And My servant Caleb, because there is another spirit in him, and he is fully following Me, I shall bring him into the land into which he has gone, and his seed shall possess it.
Num 26:64 And among these there was not a man of those numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.
Num 26:65 For YHWH had said to them, Dying they shall die in the wilderness, and not a man of them should be left except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
Num 32:12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have fully followed Jehovah.

1) son of Eliphaz and grandson of Esau; one of the dukes of Edom
Gen 36:10 these the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, the son of Adah, Esau’s wife; Reuel, the son of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
Gen 36:11 And the sons of Eliphaz: Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

Caleb=”dog”
Dogs mean gentiles…those who believe are grafted into Yisrael, those who don’t stay dogs

Mat 15:26 But answering, He said, It is not good to take the bread of the children to throw it to the little dogs.
Mat 15:27 But she said, Yes, Lord; for even the little dogs eat of the crumbs falling from the table of their lords.
Mat 15:28 Then answering, Jesus said to her, O woman, great is your faith; let it be to you as you desire. And her daughter was healed from that hour.
Mat 7:6 Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, nor throw your pearls before the pigs, that they should not trample them with their feet, and turning they charge you.
Rev 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

This is also seen in the example of Ruth the Moabitess who was a direct descendant of King David.

Midrash Tanhuma from Sacred Books of the East vol IV pg 23
“How great is faith! It secures happiness and salvation. Abraham’s faith was accounted to him as righteousness. It was the faith which the Israelites had that redeemed them from Egypt (Exod. iv. 31). Their faith on the bank of the Red Sea carried them over that sea and brought them to the land of promise. The Lord keepeth the faithful (Ps. xxxi.). The righteous liveth by his faith (Habak. ii.). The last redemption of Israel will only be effected through faith. See how King David values faith (Ps. cv.). Concerning faith, David says, “This is the gate of the Lord, the righteous shall enter therein.”

Disinheritance can come because of unbelief and a new line of heirs can come through one man. Moses was a picture of Jesus. ALL the branches of the olive tree were broken off according to Paul in Romans 11. The chosen people are those who repent and come to belief in Messiah and are grafted back into that olive tree of Israel.
Num 14:11 And YHWH said to Moses, Until when will this people despise Me? And until when will they continue not to believe in Me for all the signs I have done in its midst?
Num 14:12 I shall strike it with pestilence and dispossess (yarash KJV disinherit) it. And I will make you a nation greater and mightier than it.

Deu 32:5 They have corrupted {shachat}* themselves; they are not His sons; it is their blemish; they are a crooked and perverse generation.

*In the Song of Moses, it is prophesied that Israel would corrupt themselves and not be considered His sons any longer. This word corrupt is a direct reference back to the sin of the golden calf. It was during this time that YHWH was going to destroy Israel and make of Moshe a mighty nation.
Exo 32:5 And Aaron saw, and he built an altar before it. And Aaron called and said, A feast to YHWH tomorrow.
Exo 32:6 And they rose early on the morrow, and they offered burnt offerings and brought near peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Exo 32:7 And YHWH spoke to Moses, Come, go down, for your people whom you caused to go up from Egypt are corrupted {shachat};
Exo 32:8 they have quickly turned off from the way which I commanded them; they have made for themselves a casted calf and have bowed to it, and have sacrificed to it. And they have said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
Exo 32:9 And YHWH said to Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people.

Becoming strangers through idolatry
Eze 14:4 Therefore, speak to them and say to them, So says the Lord YHWH: Every man of the house of Israel who causes idols to go up in his heart, and who puts the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet, I, YHWH, will answer him in it by the host of his idols,
Eze 14:5 so that I may capture the house of Israel in their own heart, who are estranged (zur-stranger) from Me by their idols, all of them.
Eze 14:6 Therefore, say to the house of Israel, So says the Lord YHWH: turn, and be turned from your idols, and from all your abominations turn away your faces.

Isa 1:4 Woe, sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, sons who corrupt! They have forsaken Jehovah; they have scorned the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged* backward.

God’s Elect are those that came out of Judah and Jacob…who enter into the new covenant through Messiah Jesus
Isa 65:9 And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah one to inherit My mountains. And My elect shall inherit, and My servants shall live there.
