The 1840 election saw the Whigs obtain control of the House of Representatives which led to John White becoming Speaker of the House. Whigs would lose control of the House in the next election which consequently led to White losing this position as Speaker. He served as Speaker for less than two years and would die two years later at the age of 43. His name meaning is speaking of the atonement mentioned in relation to the ark of Noah.

John means grace of God.

White is the color of purity and atonement (Revelation 19:8; Daniel 7:9; Isaiah 1:18). In names it was used of a baby who was ‘without blemish.’ The name could also refer to a person who lived at a ‘wiht’ which is a bend of a river or a place of grazing. Finally, it can refer to a ‘wait’ which is a place of ambush. All of these concepts are referring to the ark of Noah and the flood.

The ‘pitch’ that Noah covered the ark in is from the Hebrew word כפר ‘kaphar’ which means atonement.

Genesis 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

The connection between the color white and כפר ‘kaphar’ is seen in the Biblical holiday known as the Day of Atonement, in Hebrew called ‘Yom Kippur.’ The Day of Atonement is a shadow picture of the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, when believers are clothed in white garments (Revelation 19:8) and then enter into the promised land with the Bridegroom when His feet step down on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4; Acts 1:9-11). This is the time when believers ‘enter the ark’ and the enemies of the Lord are destroyed.

A place by a river or pasture refers to the waters of the flood as well as a beautiful picture of the Good Shepherd who protects us in the midst of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:1-6). Interestingly, the name Noah comes from the Hebrew word נוח ‘nuach’ which literally means a shepherd leading his flock to pasture.

Finally, the concept of ambush is seen in the flood as well.

Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, in the seventeenth day of the month, in this day all the fountains of the great deep were risen, and the windows of the heavens were opened up.

The Hebrew word for ‘windows’ in Genesis 7:11 is ארובה ‘arubah’ which is a ‘place for an ambush’ coming from the root ארב ‘arav’ which means to ambush.
