The Presidents Code – President Pro Tempore William Bradford
The Federalists kept control of the Senate in the 1796 election which led to five different Federalist President Pro Tempores in the 5th Congress.
William Bradford’s name meaning is speaking of God giving Adam a helpmeet and establishing the family unit.
William from the Germanic name ‘Willahelm’ which is a combination of the words ‘wil’ meaning desire or will and ‘helm’ meaning helmet or protection. The name William points to Adam becoming the ‘head’ of the family (Ephesians 5:23; 1 Corinthians 11:3).
Bradford comes from a surname which originally meant a “broad ford” in Old English. These two names continue the storyline of Adam and the creation of his companion Eve.
The English word ‘broad’ is a slang word for a woman referring to her ‘broad’ hips. This traces back further to a similar meaning in the Hebrew word זנה ‘zanah’ which means to spread abroad and is used in reference to unfaithful women. This is an interesting connection to Eve as her unfaithfulness led to the fall of mankind (2 Corinthians 11:3). The word ‘ford’ means to cross over from one place to another. Scripture associates marriage with this concept of leaving one place to go to another (Genesis 2:24). It was also through Eve’s sin that mankind would then be forced to cross over from Paradise to a cursed land.
