The Presidents Code – President Pro Tempore Samuel Southard (continued)
His name meaning is speaking of the days of Noah and God’s delivering of Noah from the Flood. As the Vice Presidency was vacant due to the ascendancy to the Presidency of John Tyler, Southard would be the next in line of Presidential succession. Henry Clay attempted to force John Tyler into resigning from office which would have made Southard the next President. Southard however, would leave office due to poor health which would set a trend for the leaders of the Congress during Tyler’s Presidency in connection to the cutting short of man’s days on earth through the Flood (Genesis 6:3).
Samuel comes from the Hebrew name שמואל ‘shemuel’ which is a combination of the Hebrew words שמע ‘shema’ which means to hear and obey and the word אל ‘el’ which means God. This points to Noah who walked with God and was obedient to His voice (Genesis 6:9).
Lewis is a Medieval English form of the name Louis. Louis traces back to the Germanic name Chlodevech which is a combination of the words ‘hlud’ meaning fame and ‘wig’ meaning warrior. The “famous warriors” of this time period were the giants. They were the mighty men of old, the men of renown or fame.
Genesis 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Genesis 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Genesis 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
Genesis 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Southard comes from the words ‘suo’ meaning south and ‘worth’ meaning an enclosure. In Hebrew, the word for south is ימין ‘yamiyn’ which also means the right hand as the right hand faces south when one is facing East. In ancient times, man used the East for direction like modern man uses North for direction. In the Scriptures, God’s Right Hand is associated with salvation and victory over His enemies (Psalm 18:35; 20:6; 21:8; 45:3; 60:5). Deliverance from the Flood came to Noah through an enclosure or ark and was a picture of salvation in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:21) who sits at the Right Hand of God (Psalm 110:1; Acts 5:31; 7:55-56).
