The Presidents Code – President Pro Tempore Samuel Smith
Samuel Smith was put into the position of President Pro Tempore in December of 1805 and would remain in that seat through the remainder of the 9th Congress continuing into a large portion of the next Congress as well. He would later re-assume this role during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson. His name is pointing to the punishment of God given after Adam partook of the tree of knowledge.
Samuel comes from the Hebrew name שמואל ‘Shemuel’ which is a combination of the words שמע ‘shema’ which means to hear and אל ‘El’ which means God. After Adam and Eve partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil they knew they were naked and hid themselves because they heard the voice of God and knew they had disobeyed Him (Genesis 3:7-11).
Smith comes from an English surname which means a metal worker or blacksmith. The name is derived from the Old English word ‘smitan’ which means to smite or hit. In Hebrew, the striking of a hammer is the word הלם ‘halam.’ The root of this word is לם ‘lam’ which is the staff of a shepherd and represented his authority. This staff would be used to protect his flock but also used to defend them and punish evil. God was the Shepherd of Adam and after his sin would punish all those who were involved in the sin of eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge (Genesis 3:14-19).
