The Presidents Code – President Pro Tempore Samuel Smith (continued)
Samuel Smith also began his term as President Pro Tempore during the John Quincy Adams Presidency, yet another link between Adams and Jackson. His name meaning is displaying the salvation given to all those who would call upon the name of the Good Shepherd.
Samuel Smith’s name points to the deliverance of the Seed of the woman who sets mankind free from the slavery of sin.
Samuel comes from the Hebrew name שמואל ‘Shemuel’ which is a combination of the words שמע ‘shema’ which means to hear and אל ‘El’ which means God. Deliverance comes as a result of God hearing the cries of man. This can be seen during Israel’s enslavement in Egypt (Exodus 2:24; 6:5). This was a picture of confessing faith in the Seed of the woman, Jesus, which is the path to deliverance and restoration to God (Matthew 10:32; Romans 10:9-11).
Smith comes from an English surname which means a metal worker or blacksmith. The name is derived from the Old English ‘smitan’ which means to smite or hit. In Hebrew, the striking of a hammer is the word הלם ‘halam.’ The root of this word is לם ‘lam’ which is the staff of a shepherd and represented his authority. Jesus associates His death, the smiting of the Seed of the woman, with Him being shepherd over His flock (John 10:11-18).
