The Presidents Code – President Pro Tempore Abraham Baldwin
The 1800 election saw the Democratic-Republicans take control of the Senate leading to Abraham Baldwin’s election as President Pro Tempore. His name is speaking of Adam and Eve and their call to follow the commandments of God. Their inability to do so is one of the primary themes of Genesis 3.
Abraham means the father of a multitude. This name points to Adam and Eve who were commanded to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:22, 28) and were the parents of all mankind (Genesis 3:20).
Baldwin comes from the Germanic words ‘bald’ which means bold or brave and ‘win’ which means friend. Being bold and brave in Scripture is associated with keeping the commandments of God (Joshua 1:6-9). The Hebrew word for friend is ריע ‘reya,’ which also means a companion or lover (Jeremiah 3:1). This points to Adam and Eve, the first couple who were called to be courageous in keeping the commands of the Most High. They understood this as can be seen in Eve’s response to the serpent in Genesis 3:2-3.
Genesis 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
