Oliver Ellsworth was appointed to the office of Chief Justice in 1796 after the resignation of John Rutledge the previous December. Ellsworth would serve until 1800 when he resigned due to poor health.

Ellsworth was considered an important figure in establishing the United States as a sovereign nation through his contributions to the Constitutional Convention and his decisions while Chief Justice. He encouraged the Supreme Court to write a consensus opinion on cases as opposed to individual judgments. This practice has continued to the present time.  Ellsworth was key in establishing the character of the nation. His name is speaking of the character of Adam in the Garden.  So too, Adam’s character was passed down to subsequent generations (Genesis 5:3).

Oliver is from the Germanic name Alfher. Alfher comes from the words ‘alf’ meaning elf and ‘hari’ meaning army, warrior. In German mythology, elves were ‘divine’ beings. So Alfer has the meaning of ‘divine warrior.’ This too points to Adam as he is the only person to walk the earth other than Jesus Christ that is said to have come from God.

Luke 3:38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

The word ‘elf’ comes from the Old English word ‘albiz’ which traces back to the Latin word ‘albus’ which means white. ‘Albus’ comes from the Hebrew word לבן ‘laban’ which means white. White is a symbol of sinlessness and purity. When Adam was in the Garden he was placed there without sin, the handiwork of God which was only good (Genesis 1:31).

Ellsworth has the meaning of ‘Elli’s estate.’ Elli derives from the Hebrew name אֱלִיָּהוּ ‘Elijah’ which means my God is Yah. Here we see in Chief Justice Ellsworth name the picture of sinless and pure man that was created directly from the Hand of the Most High and placed in His ‘estate,’ the Garden of Eden.

Ellsworth’s term as Chief Justice continued into the Presidency of John Adams which is continuation of the storyline of Adam in the Garden.
