The Chief Justice is the head of the Judicial branch of the United States and its spokesperson. He is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Unlike the other branches of government, those selected to the Supreme Court serve for life or until they resign.

John Jay was President of the Continental Congress from 1778-1779 and considered one of the seven key Founding Fathers. He helped to write the Federalist papers which were written to persuade Americans to support the ratification of the Constitution. Washington offered to make John Jay his Secretary of State which he declined so Washington offered him a new title of Chief Justice of the United States. Washington described this role as the “keystone of our political fabric”. The Judiciary Act of 1789 was passed on September 24th of 1789 which made the office of Chief Justice official and Jay was appointed as Chief Justice two days later.

John Jay is most famous for his negotiations with Great Britain which became known as the Jay Treaty. This treaty guaranteed peace between Britain and America during a time in which Britain was fighting the French. This treaty was one of the acts of the Washington administration which garnered opposition by Thomas Jefferson leading to the first political parties in the nation.

It is important to note that every one of the initial leaders in our government were of strong Christian character. John Jay was yet another leader who had a strong faith in the Word of God. Jay believed America was a Christian nation and spoke of the importance of electing Christians into leadership. He would become the President of the American Bible Society from 1821-1828.

“Real Christians will abstain from violating the rights of others, and therefore will not provoke war. Almost all nations have peace or war at the will and pleasure of rulers whom they do not elect, and who are not always wise or virtuous. Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers”. {Letter to John Murray 10/12/1816}

The name meaning of the first Chief Justice is further elaborating on Adam in the Garden. John means the grace or camp of of Yah.

Jay is derived from the jaybird. How does this fit into the narrative of Genesis? Ever heard of the term ‘naked as a ‘jaybird‘?

The phrase naked as a jaybird traces back to 19th Century America where jay was slang for a simple person. ‘Naked as a jaybird’ is referring to a completely vulnerable person. Further establishing this is that all perching birds, of which jays are a part of, are born with very little down making them ‘naked’ and helpless. The name Jay also can be linked back to the Latin name Gaius which means happy. This points to Adam and Eve who were naked and not ashamed in the Garden (Genesis 2:25).
