Daily Tidbits 1/20/12 – A House Divided Cannot Stand

Mat 12:25  But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, He said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to ruin. And every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Continuing on theme with earlier tidbits this week on Lincoln & Martin Luther King, the following quotes are shared:

On June 16th 1858, Abraham Lincoln while running for senate, gave a speech entitled ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand’ in reference to the issue of slavery.

“We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation.

Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented.

In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.

I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided.

It will become all one thing or all the other.

Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South.

Have we no tendency to the latter condition?”

Mat 12:25  But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, He said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to ruin. And every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Martin Luther King Jr. stated the following:
“All I’m saying is simply this, that all life is interrelated, that somehow we’re caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. You can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.”  {King Came Preaching: The Pulpit Power of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. pg 174}

The devil is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10) who brings forth slander and discord amongst the body of Messiah.

Pro 6:16  These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
Pro 6:17  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
Pro 6:18  An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
Pro 6:19  A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

The Hebrew word for ‘discord’ is מדן ‘medan’ which has the meaning of an accuser in a court of law pointing the finger at the accused.

Pro 16:28  A perverse man causes strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.

The Hebrew word for ‘whisperer’ is נירגן ‘nirgan’ which literally means a talebearer/slanderer.

The divisions we see in the natural realm amongst men of ‘race,’ class, and religion is a consequence of man’s carnal nature which came when he partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  A mixture of good and evil, a divided house. The serpent brought forth a false accusation against God which divided man from His God.  He divided the house so that he might take dominion.  Interestingly, the Greek word for devil, διάβολος ‘diabolos,’ literally means a false accuser (2 Timothy 3:3).

What we see in the natural is indicative of the carnal division seen in the body of Christ.

Denominations are carnal
1Co 3:4  For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

Php 2:3  doing nothing according to party spirit or self-glory, but in humility, esteeming one another as surpassing themselves;
Php 2:3  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Gal 5:19  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions (διχοστασία ‘dichostasia’ – Romans 16:17; 1 Corinthians 3:3), heresies,
Jas 3:14  But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
Jas 3:15  This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
Jas 3:16  For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Php 1:15  Some, indeed, even proclaim Christ because of envy and strife, but some also because of good will.
Php 1:16  These, indeed, announce Christ out of party spirit, not sincerely, thinking to add affliction to my bonds.
Php 1:17  But these others out of love, knowing that I am set for defense of the gospel.

When we walk carnally we can not please God
Rom 8:6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Rom 8:7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Is Christ divided?
1Co 1:12  Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
1Co 1:13  Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

We are one body
Rom 12:5  So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Gal 3:28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Phi 1:27  Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Joh 10:16  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
Joh 17:11  And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
Joh 17:21  That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
Joh 17:22  And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
1Co 6:15  Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
1Co 6:16  What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
1Co 6:17  But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
Eph 4:5  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

We all come from one blood
Act 17:26  And He made every nation of men of one blood, to live on all the face of the earth, ordaining fore-appointed seasons and boundaries of their dwelling,
Act 17:27  to seek the Lord, if perhaps they might feel after Him and might find Him, though indeed He not being far from each one of us.
Act 17:28  For in Him we live and move and exist, as also some of the poets among you have said, For we are also His offspring.
Act 17:29  Then being offspring of God, we ought not to suppose that the Godhead is like gold or silver or stone, engraved by art and the imagination of man.
Act 17:30  Truly, then, God overlooking the times of ignorance, now strictly commands all men everywhere to repent,
Act 17:31  because He set a day in which “He is going to judge the habitable world in righteousness,” by a Man whom He appointed; having given proof to all by raising Him from the dead. Psa. 9:8

We all have one Father in heaven
Mal 2:10  Is there not one father to us all? Has not one God created us? Why do we act deceitfully, each man with his brother, to profane the covenant of our fathers?
Isa 63:16  For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us; You, Jehovah, are our Father, our Redeemer; Your name is from everlasting.

One Mind and One Accord
Php 2:2  Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Act 1:14  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Act 2:46  And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Division comes as a result of man’s carnal nature inherited from the first Adam when he partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Adam was given dominion over the earth, or headship (Genesis 1:26) but when he allowed the serpent to creep into the garden and partook of the fruit of which he was commanded not to, he forfeited this dominion (Luke 4:6).

Today we see division amongst men because they put other men as their heads.  Messiah overcame the dominion of the enemy (Colossians 2:15; Acts 2:23-36) and is now the only Head on this earth (Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 5:23; Psalm 18:43).  We must not submit to other men as He alone is our head and we are all brethren (Matthew 23:8) called to serve one another in love (Galatians 5:13).  It is good to submit/subject ourselves to one another, as long as Christ remains the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:1-5; Hebrews 13:17).  Christ is not divided (1 Corinthians 1:13).

Jer 23:1  Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
Eze 34:5  And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.
Eze 34:6  My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.
Jer 50:6  My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.

The Good Shepherd gathers us together.
Isa 40:9  O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
Isa 40:10  Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Isa 40:11  He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

Eze 34:11  For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.
Eze 34:12  As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.
Eze 34:13  And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.
Eze 34:14  I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.
Eze 34:15  I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD.
Eze 34:16  I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.
Eze 34:22  Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle and cattle.
Eze 34:23  And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.
Eze 34:24  And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it.
Eze 34:25  And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

Eze 34:29  And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more.
Eze 34:30  Thus shall they know that I the LORD their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord GOD.
Eze 34:31  And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord GOD.

Joh 10:11  I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
Joh 10:14  I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
Joh 10:15  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Joh 10:16  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
Joh 10:17  Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
Joh 10:18  No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Those who are put into a position of leadership are to follow the example of Christ who came to serve all.

Joh 13:3  Jesus knowing that the Father has given all things into His hands, and that He came out from God, and goes away to God,
Joh 13:4  He rose up from the supper and laid aside His garments. And taking a towel, He girded Himself.
Joh 13:5  Then He put water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe off with the towel with which He was girded.
Joh 13:6  He then came to Simon Peter. And that one said to Him, Lord, do You wash my feet?
Joh 13:7  Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you do not yet know. But you will know after these things.
Joh 13:8  Peter said to Him, You may in no way wash my feet to the age. Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.
Joh 13:9  Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.
Joh 13:10  Jesus said to him, The one having been bathed has no need other than to wash the feet, but is wholly clean. And you are clean, but not all.
Joh 13:11  For He knew the one betraying Him. For this reason He said, You are not all clean.
Joh 13:12  Then when He had washed their feet and had taken His garments, reclining again, He said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?
Joh 13:13  You call Me the Teacher, and, the Lord. And you say well, for I AM.
Joh 13:14  If then I washed your feet, the Lord and the Teacher, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.
Joh 13:15  For I gave you an example, that as I did to you, you also should do.
Joh 13:16  Truly, truly, I say to you, A slave is not greater than his lord, nor a messenger greater than the one sending him.
Joh 13:17  If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

1Pe 2:25  For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
1Pe 5:2  Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
1Pe 5:3  Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
1Pe 5:4  And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
1Pe 5:5  Likewise, younger ones be subject to older ones; and all being subject to one another. Put on humility, because God sets Himself “against proud ones, but He gives grace to humble ones.” Prov. 3:34
1Pe 5:6  Then be humbled under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in time;

Rom 12:16  minding the same thing toward one another, not minding high things, but yielding to the lowly. Do not become wise within yourselves;

Php 2:2  fulfill my joy, that you think the same, having the same love, one in soul, minding the one thing,
Php 2:3  doing nothing according to party spirit or self-glory, but in humility, esteeming one another as surpassing themselves;
Php 2:4  each not looking at the things of themselves, but each also the things of others.
Php 2:5  For think this within you, which mind was also in Christ Jesus,
Php 2:6  who subsisting in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God,
Php 2:7  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, having become in the likeness of men
Php 2:8  and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, having become obedient until death, even the death of a cross.
Php 2:9  Because of this also God highly exalted Him and gave Him a name above every name,
Php 2:10  that at the name of Jesus “every knee should bow,” of heavenly ones, and earthly ones, and ones under the earth,
Php 2:11  and “every tongue should confess” that Jesus Christ is “Lord,” to the glory of God the Father. Isa. 45:23
Php 2:12  So, then, my beloved, even as you always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much rather in my absence, cultivate your salvation with fear and trembling,
Php 2:13  for it is God who is working in you both to will and to work for the sake of His good pleasure.

The Good Shepherd gathers mankind to His bosom.  It is through the work of Christ on the cross that mankind is brought into His family.

Isa 40:10  Behold, the Lord Jehovah will come with strength, and His arm rules for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him, and His wage before Him.
Isa 40:11  He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; He shall gather lambs with His arm; and carry them in His bosom; those with young He will lead;
Psa 89:50  Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants, my bearing in my bosom the insults of the many peoples
Psa 89:51  with which Your enemies have cursed, O Jehovah; with which they have cursed the footsteps of Your anointed.
Eph 2:8  For by grace you are saved, through faith, and this not of yourselves; it is the gift of God;
Eph 2:9  not of works, that not anyone should boast;
Eph 2:10  for we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God before prepared that we should walk in them.
Eph 2:11  Because of this, remember that you, the nations, were then in the flesh (those having been called Uncircumcision by those having been called Circumcision in the flesh made by hands)
Eph 2:12  that at that time you were without Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers of the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
Eph 2:13  But now, in Christ Jesus you who then were afar off, came to be near by the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:14  For He is our peace, He making us both one, and breaking down the middle wall of partition,
Eph 2:15  in His flesh causing to cease the enmity, the Law of the commandments in decrees, that He might in Himself create the two into one new man, making peace,
Eph 2:16  and might reconcile both in one body to God through the cross, slaying the enmity in Himself.
Eph 2:17  And coming, He proclaimed “peace to you, the ones afar off, and to the ones near.” Isa. 57:19
Eph 2:18  For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
Eph 2:19  So, then, you are no longer strangers and tenants, but you are fellow citizens* of the saints and of the family of God,

Through Christ we have been given citizenship in Heaven. This gives us unity regardless of nationality.

Through Christ we have been adopted into the family of the LORD. We should no longer consider ourselves White or Black or Hispanic etc… This gives us unity regardless of ethnicity.

Through Christ we are made redeemed Israelites, Christians, Abraham’s seed and heirs of the promise. We are not to divide ourselves as Catholics or Protestants, Baptists or Lutherans etc., we are redeemed Israelites (Christians) and adopted into the family of God. We are sons of God and co-heirs with Messiah. This gives us unity regardless of religious beliefs/doctrine.

By believing in Christ Jesus we have ONE KING, ONE LAW, ONE HERITAGE, ONE FAMILY.

Religion vs. relationship.  Agreement betwixt men or covenant with the Most High through His Son.  Freedom or slavery.  Love or hate.
1Co 13:9  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
1Co 13:10  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
1Co 13:11  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
1Co 13:12  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
1Co 13:13  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

  1. Hi Levi,
    May I confess very candidly, that your study articles in Littleguyintheeye, have highly encouraged my search for the truth. You are a special blessing to this generation.
    Your post on “Diveded we fall together we stand”, answers partly my question on “Clean & Unclean Things”. Some how, you miss understood my question as I was actually asking about, “Clean & Unclean Meat”, did the death of the Messiah do away with Health Law?
    It will serve me right, if you do justice to my question.
    May the source of infinite wisdom continue to feed you through Christ Jesus. Amen.
    I am your’s in Yeshua as Messiah, Okpu U.

  2. A house divided can not stand because it is not single, division being a gendering of soul/feminine and spirit/masculine ….. our spirit and soul are not separate but by perception we view them this way, which is The Truth cast down by our own reasoning gathered outside of self/truth by our flesh or five husbands/senses ……

    We abide in a realm where our soul rules over us having forsaken our true husband … but this not out of the order of GOD
