Daily Tidbits 1/13/12 – Catholic

The word Catholic literally means ‘on the whole’ from the Greek word καθολικός ‘katholikos’ which is a combination of the words κατά meaning “about” and όλος meaning “whole”.  This word is most commonly used in reference to the Roman Catholic Church as this group feels they represent the ‘universal’ body of believers.

The word Catholic is not used in Scripture but was used by early believers in reference to the ‘general’ or ‘catholic’ epistles written by James, Peter, John & Jude due to their letters being written to believers in general whereas Paul wrote to specific congregations.  It is interesting to note that there are 7 of these ‘catholic’ epistles (James, 1 & 2 Peter, 3 epistles of John & Jude).  This corresponds with the 7 branches of the Menorah which represent the body of Messiah…the true Catholic (universal) Church.  Note, this study is not an attack against Roman Catholic believers…this study is an attempt to show that the true ‘Catholic’ Church is the entire body of Christ.

James, Peter and Jude send their ‘catholic’ epistles to the 12 tribes of Israel.  The Church is the Israel of God.
Jas 1:1  James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes in the Dispersion, greeting:
1Pe 1:1  Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the elect sojourners of the dispersion of Pontus, of Galatia, of Cappadocia, of Asia, and of Bithynia,
2Pe 1:1  Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those equally precious with us, having obtained faith in the righteousness of our God and our Savior, Jesus Christ:
Jud 1:1  Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to the ones called in God the Father, having been set apart, and having been kept to Jesus Christ:

The Good Shepherd gathers His sheep into one (Catholic) body/church.

The Roman Catholic church claims Apostolic authority over the body of Messiah based upon the statement of Messiah to Peter that ‘on this rock, I will build my church’ (Matthew 16:12-23)  However, this authority is given to each and every believer who professes the same that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God just as Peter did.  Herein lies the theme of this tidbit.  Authority that comes from a religious system or authority that comes from the Creator.

Mat 16:19  And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven. And whatever you bind on earth shall occur, having been bound in Heaven. And whatever you may loose on the earth shall be, having been loosed in Heaven.

This does not mean only Peter or the “Pope” or “Church leadership” as later Christ speaks of this authority being given to ALL believers.

Mat 18:18  Truly I say to you, Whatever you bind on the earth will be, having been bound in Heaven. And whatever you loose on the earth will be, having been loosed in Heaven.

The Roman Catholic Church claims authority tracing back to Peter which is invested today in the Pope.   The word ‘pope’ literally means father.

It is interesting to note that the English word ‘father’ traces back to the Hebrew word פטר ‘pater’ which means to break free as in the opening of a womb and is strongly linked to the name ‘Peter.’

פטר ‘pater’ is the opening of the womb, or breaking free (Exodus 13:1).  The first born sanctified to the LORD are redeemed, those of Egypt (sin) are destroyed.

The word ‘pope’ means father and derived from the Hebrew אב ‘av.’  אב ‘av’ literally means a pole of vine.

אב  ‘av’ has the meaning of a pole:  In English, the word ‘pole’ comes from the Old English ‘pal’ which traces back to the Latin ‘palus’, which literally means a stake.  The English word ‘pale’ derives from this word.  ‘Pale’ means to fix or fasten and is related to the English word ‘pact.’  A pact is an agreement, treaty, compact which comes from the Latin word ‘pactum’ which means a contract/covenant.  A covenant through a pole/stake…

Here we see אב ‘av,’ the first word of the Hebrew language (in alphabetical order) pointing to the most important event in human history,   The crucifixion of Christ Jesus, and the New Covenant (Isaiah 42:6; Matthew 26:28)  in His blood which restores mankind back to the Father.

The concrete meaning of the word אב ‘av‘ is the pole/pillar of the house/tent.  Who is the pillar?  It is Messiah Jesus

Gen 28:17  And he was afraid, and said, How fearful is this place! This is nothing except the house of God, and this is the door to Heaven.
Gen 28:18  And Jacob started up early in the morning and took the stone which he had placed at his head, and he placed it as a pillar; and he poured oil on the top of it.

The Hebrew word for Messiah/Christ comes from this concept of anointing.

Gen 28:19  And he called the name of that place, The House of God. And yet the name of the city was at first Luz.

Gen 28:20  And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God is with me and keeps me in this way which I am going, and gives to me bread to eat and clothing to wear,
Gen 28:21  and I return in peace to the house of my father, then Jehovah shall be my God,
Gen 28:22  and this stone which I have placed as a memorial pillar shall become the house of God; and all which You shall give to me, I will tithe the tenth to You.

Messiah (His body) is the House of God (Bethel)
Gen 35:14  And Jacob set up a pillar(מצבת ‘matstsebeth’) in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
Gen 35:15  And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel {בּית־אל ‘beytḣ’el’ – house of God}

H4676 מצּבה matstsêbâh mats-tsay-baw’
Feminine (causative) participle of H5324; something stationed, that is, a column or (memorial stone); by analogy an idol: – garrison, (standing) image, pillar.

Messiah is the image of God

2Co 4:4  in whom the god of this age has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, so that the brightness of the gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.

The congregation of believers are to be the “image” of Messiah

Rom 8:29  because whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be the First-born among many brothers.
2Co 3:18  But we all with our face having been unveiled, having beheld the glory of the Lord in a mirror, are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord Spirit.

The true ‘catholic’ church is the body of Messiah who are formed into His Image, the Word.

1Co 6:20  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

The Olive Tree

אב ‘av’ also means fruit that is attached to the tree (pole).

Joh 15:1  I am the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.
Joh 15:2  Every branch in Me not bearing fruit, He takes it away; and each one bearing fruit, He prunes, so that it may bear more fruit.
Joh 15:3  You are already pruned because of the Word which I have spoken to you.
Joh 15:4  Remain in Me, and I in you. As the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself, unless it remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.
Joh 15:5  I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one abiding in Me, and I in him, this one bears much fruit, because apart from Me you are not able to execute, nothing.
Joh 15:6  Unless one remains in Me, he is cast out as the branch and is dried up; and they gather and throw them into a fire, and they are burned.
Joh 15:7  If you remain in Me, and My Words remain in you, whatever you desire you will ask, and it shall happen to you.
Joh 15:8  In this My Father is glorified, that you should bear much fruit; and you will be disciples to Me.
Joh 15:9  As the Father loved Me, I also loved you; continue in My love.
Joh 15:10  If you keep My commandments you will continue in My love, as I have kept My Father’s commandments and continue in His love.

The Pillar is linked to the Root

Isa 6:13  But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance {מצבת ‘matstsebeth’ – a monumental stone; also the stock of a tree: – pillar, substance.} is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed (Messiah – Galatians 3:16) shall be the substance {מצבת ‘matstsebeth’} thereof.

Rom 11:16  Now if the firstfruit is holy, so also the lump. And if the root is holy, so also the branches.  {See Biblical Definition – Olive Tree}

Peter comes from the Greek word Πέτρος ‘petros’ which means rock.  This too is linked with birth.  Believers are to remember the rock from whence they are hewn (Isaiah 51:1-2) speaking of Abraham whose name means a FATHER of many nations (or it could be said the Father of Catholicism as ‘catholic’ is strictly defined as ‘universal’ meaning all nations). It is interesting to note that in the Septuagint, God’s anointed such as Abraham were called χριστῶν ‘christon’ or “Christians”.

Psa 105:15  (104:15) Μὴ ἅπτεσθε τῶν χριστῶν μου καὶ ἐν τοῖς προφήταις μου μὴ πονηρεύεσθε.

Who are the children of Abraham?  Those who are in Christ (Galatians 3:16).

“We are called Christians, after Christ’s name, because made partakers of Christ’s nature.”  – George Whitefield

Heb 3:14  For we have become partakers {μέτοχος ‘metochos’} of Christ, if truly we hold the beginning of the assurance firm to the end;

μέτοχος ‘metochos’ means ‘partakers,’ ‘fellows’ or ‘partners.’  It is translated in the Septuagint as בחר ‘bachar’ which means ‘chosen.’  Messiah is THE Chosen One, we are chosen people in Him.

The chosen are those who are born again.  We are born again by the Word being implanted into our hearts and watered until it brings forth life.
1Pe 2:9  But you are “an elect race,” {γενος εκλεκτον ‘genos eklekton’} a royal priesthood,” “a holy nation,” “a people for possession,” so that “you may openly speak of the virtues” of the One who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; LXX-Ex. 23:22; MT-Ex. 19:5, 6

The word translated into English as elect or chosen is a Greek word which when broken down to its root means “by or from the Word”.  Elect/chosen comes from the Greek word ἐκλεκτός ‘eklektos’ which traces back to the words ἐκ ‘ek’ meaning out from and λέγω ‘lego’ meaning a word.

Christians are those who proclaim Jesus as Christ, following in the footsteps of Peter.

Mat 16:15  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
Mat 16:16  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Mat 16:17  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 16:18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

As mentioned earlier, the name Peter is linked to the Hebrew word פטר ‘pater.’ פטר ‘pater’ is further linked to the word פת ‘pat’ which means an opening or a hole.  Numerous words with the ‘pat’ sound have similar meaning such as פתח ‘petach’ which means to open, פתק ‘petaq’ which means to split open or free something.  פתר ‘pater’ means to open or solve a problem.  פת ‘pat’ is also linked to birth as it is the word for a woman’s privy from whence a child פטר ‘pater’ breaks forth.  Further connecting the body of Messiah to this idea of birth is seen in the word מופת ‘mophat’ which means a miracle and comes from the root word פת ‘pat.’

Isa 8:18  Behold, I and the children (Messiah & His Body) whom Jehovah has given to me are for signs and wonders (מופת ‘mophat’) in Israel from Jehovah of Hosts, who dwells in Mount Zion.

The word ‘catholic,’ as mentioned above, comes from the Greek word καθολικός ‘katholikos’ which means “on or about the whole.”  This word further traces back to the Hebrew word כל ‘kol’ which means ‘all’ but literally means eating once the harvest is complete.

Amazingly, the word for bride כללה ‘kelalah’ (His bride being the ‘catholic’ church) comes from this same root.  The word for temple/house in Hebrew הכל ‘heykel’ also comes from this root  כל ‘kol.’

There is one faith and one body, one Catholic church of Christ.  This is His body, His house.  It is not just the Roman Catholic Church or one Protestant denomination.  It is those who are in covenant with Him.

“Unity in the body of Christ does not rest on uniformity, but on our common ‘blood,’ which is the blood of Christ.  We are now members of one family, and that identity cannot be taken from us, no matter how much we disagree or quarrel.” (The Gospel in Human Contexts – Paul Hiebert pg 193)

Eph 4:1  Then I, the prisoner in the Lord, exhort you to walk worthily of the calling in which you were called,

Eph 4:2  with all humility and meekness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love,

Eph 4:3  being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Eph 4:4  There is one body and one Spirit {Spirit of Truth John 14:17; 17:17}, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;

Eph 4:5  one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Eph 4:6  one God and Father of all, the One above all and through all and in you all.

Eph 4:7  But to each one of us was given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Eph 4:11  And indeed He gave some to be apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers;

Eph 4:12  with a view to the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ,

Eph 4:13  until we all may come to the unity of the faith and of the full knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

Eph 4:14  so that we may no longer be infants, being blown and carried about by every wind of doctrine, in the sleight of men, in craftiness to the deceit of error,

Eph 4:15  but speaking the truth in love, we may grow up into Him in all things, who is the Head, the Christ,

Eph 4:16  from whom all the body, having been fitted and compacted together through every assisting bond, according to the effectual working of one measure in each part, produces the growth of the body to the building up of itself in love.
